that is not at all what happened.

McCain is the clinch-pin vote in a major piece of legislation. the republican majority will not vote for the bailout bill without McCain backing it (because they can't vote for something their candidate is against?). and the Democrats can't pass it without Republican support. So, it's really going to be up to McCain to rally the Republican troops and direct them as to the way the party will vote (which is pathetic, i think, but that's really a gripe with big party politics and not McCain personally).

IN REALITY, it's probably in the best interest of this country for McCain to critically examine the bill and go to DC to figure things out. His apathy on this issue, or his careless approval or disapproval of the bill could be unimaginably detrimental to this country's economy.

I think McCain was idiotic with this move. It was Obama's initial intent to go about doing this, he left McCain a message about it at 8:30 this morning, and then five minutes after McCain confirmed this, he told the press he was doing it like he was the one who had the idea.

But Obama had a press conference and stated that McCain was wrong, AND he was not going to postpone the debate. Presidents have to multitask. McCain and Obama miss enough votes as it is, why do they HAVE to be there for this certain senate vote?
