and aside from that bullshit, his mother is white. and for a time he lived with his whitey white grandparents in hawaii which isn't exactly atlanta or clinton hill. and he graduated from fucking columbia and harvard law so if we're going into this from a racial standpoint, he's as fucking white as a black man can be.
obama is an exceptional being. whether he's a black man or a pot bellied pig is irrelevant. anyone voting for him merely because he's black is as ignorant as not voting for him because he's black.

I semi-agree. Obama wouldn't be where he is today had he been a Republican. People want to vote Democrat, so they'll vote for the Democrat candidate. A few people will not vote Obama purely because he's not Their Guy, but I wouldn't think it'll be that many that'll choose McCain for that reason.

What's the percentage of US presidents that have been black? Or let's consider it only since the 60's, stats any better? Thought not... Traditionally, white folks just haven't voted for black folks - sad, eh?

I don't understand the criticism that comes his way. As an outsider looking in, he was streets ahead of any of the other contenders for the Democratic nomination and surely is a cert for president.

You never know, though. We don't say, "Only in America" for nothing.

I think you're right. I've not noticed his campaign milking his race, so I don't see how it would work in his favour. Whereas there has been rhetoric flying around to the effect that you shouldn't vote Obama because he's "trying to manipulate your white guilt" - in other words, if you vote for Obama, it's because you're too scared to vote for a white guy (or white woman?). I found that rather distasteful and really quite inaccurate.

I'm pretty sure that, if a candidate being black would guarantee them a place in the Whitehouse, neither party would have "risen above" fielding one, either at this election or, for that matter, all the previous ones. It obviously isn't Obama's race that got him where he is, unless we're proposing that blackness has become an absolute vote winner only in the last 4 years.

Yes, EXACTLY. I meant to say something like this yesterday but the work computer wasn't working. All those black people that we're so 'sure are voting for Obama only because he's black' (so sure we don't even need to ask any of them, apparently)? I am sure that almost all of them voted for Kerry, Gore, and Clinton. No I didn't ask them either but I do have an idea of how party voting usually breaks down racially.

How is that different from the women who voted for Hillary because she's a woman? Furthermore, look at all those majority-white states he won, ffs. Iowa, anyone? Easily one of the whitest states in the Union.

JFK got a huge boost from the Catholics of the nation in the 60s because Catholicism was in a way a 2nd class religion back in the 60s in several parts of the country (and still is in some areas), clearly the Catholic (and Irish, who like Italians and Slavs of the day were viewed in much the same light Mexicans are today) felt a kinship by his popularity.
