South American doctors are trying to find out the reason behind the hefty weight of an 11-month-old baby.



The baby weighs 28kgs (nearly 62lbs) - that is the average weight of an eight-year-old in Colombia, where he was born.

The baby's mother, Milena Orosco de Agudelo, says he began to balloon when he was just two months old.


"He had some test done and the results show that he has a thyroid malfunction," said Ms Orosco.

But the doctors are still uncertain.

"The baby will have tests done to see if he's obese or we're dealing with hyperthyroidism," said doctor David Dias of the Barranquilla Paediatric Hospital.

The normal weight for an 11-month old boy is between 6 and 7kgs (13lbs 4oz to 15lbs 7oz).

Because of his weight, the boy cannot wear his older brother's hand-me-downs and can only wear giant size nappies.
