| | | I'm not *exactly* sure why this started, but Georgia lords over a region called Ossetia. Meanwhile there's separatists who want to be their own country (a la Chechnya vs Russia) and Russia was mediating talks.
Apparently (and somewhat amusingly) Russia is backing the Ossetian fighters because Georgia sent troops down to Ossetia and have clashed with Georgian fighters.
Russia is calling foul on "genocide." It will be interesting to see how this plays out. |

| | | Ossetia wants to secede Georgia and become part of Russia, eventually. Georgia moved to stop this and Russia stepped in. Russia has pushed Georgian troops from Ossetia. |

| | | I was actually going to post on this, but I couldn't find the right link I wanted to use.
All I can say is, as someone who was hoping to go to Georgia and was following their post-Soviet history, that it is heartbreaking to watch and I can only hope for a peaceful resolution to come swiftly. |

| | | Honestly I think it has more to do with Russia giving the west a display of their power than saving live's... A warning if you will. And I must say it has disturbed me.

| | | Russia has been trying to influence Georgia since the it broke away in the 90s. Georgia was negotiating entry into NATO and Russia obviously didn't like that. They gave all the South Ossetians (South Ossetia is officially part of Georgia) Russian Citizenship so they could have causus beli. A very old trick. South Ossetians aren't ethnically Russian or anything.

| | | Georgian troops tried to sieze the capital of an independent state and Russian troops chased them out...
That's the story I'm getting. Seems to me Georgia picked a fight they couldn't finish. As far as 'russian separatists', they are in another independent state altogether.
Now Georgia is whining like a bitch. |

| | | South Ossetia is still part of Georgia. Acting independent may well allow you to be considered de facto independent by interested parties (Russia), but it doesn't mean you are.
Ultimately, Russia has attacked Georgia and Georgia has not attacked Russia. And it seems any arguments Russia used to justify its actions in Chechnya may not be used by Georgia in this situation. Why?
