that's the thing though, and something i alluded to in one of my hundred comments. the opposition to interracial marriage (sometimes justified by scripture) uses so many of the same arguments that opponents of same-sex marriage use today. i've read editorials from your neck of the woods published in 1948 which are completely applicable to this debate. if she did use her beliefs to deny an interracial marriage, would you still let her keep her job?

Sexuality and "beliefs" are not equivalent in my view. Why should Muslims get extra time off/an extended break on Fridays just because they are religious?

her religious justification doesn't hold up as she's been irreligiously marrying people in civil ceremonies all her career, so it must be just a personal prejudice that she attempts to justifiy by religion...

...but she may have a case in that her employment conditions have been changed. you can't usually hire someone as one thing and then make them do a different thing. i'd argue that a gay civil partnership is not different enough to a straight civil wedding for her to have a complaint, because any substantial difference only arises from her prejudices, not the acts and duties she is required to perform, and these prejudices, as we have seen, cannot be justified through religion, which (bizarrely) the law often makes allowances for.
