| | | Fuckin' storms! Just what we need for food prices, eh? I'd read on another board that local news in one state or another mentioned that only 1 in every 10 corn seeds planted has actually sprouted. I can't verify the source but I'm not too surprised. Food prices are already kicking everyone in the ass it seems (thanks, ethanol). TheCabin.net ·· Flooding in the Midwest could reduce corn supplies, raise prices 06/15/08
Two tornadoes hit my hometown of Omaha a week or so ago; they were freak storms that appeared out of nowhere and evaded radar (at 2am no less), thus the sirens didn't sound until houses were already being ripped apart. However, no one died or was injured (miraculously) and one of the "victims" was a Wal-Mart. Half of the roof was ripped off and landed on a nearby Target www.kansascity.com | 06/12/2008 | Tornado surge a trend that is taking toll
(btw read the comments for a good LOL)
Every year there's tornado outbreaks and someplace or another floods on this continent. This year's been pretty damn intense so far. 83 of 99 counties in Iowa are considered disaster areas (almost the entire state, ffs). I know thumper and dithyrambic are from Iowa, are they around?
I'm probably more freaked out by the possibility of flood than I am tornadoes (I've been in tornadoes before; never been in a flood), and I live about 7 blocks from a river that flooded in '93. I'm slightly nervous.
Well, I gotta go, another round of storms are a-headin' my way! |

Oh lord! Was it scary?
Yeah there was a horrible flood that hit Iowa, Missouri and Kansas pretty bad as well as a few other states. Even Kansas City and Lawrence flooded --the Plaza was partially underwater and so was North Lawrence.
In addition to missing these storms, you also missed the tornado that touched down in Wyandotte county on Thursday. The guy who was flying around in a helicopter for one of the newsstations actually caught it touching down on live TV. I don't think it did very much damage at least. |

| | | Yeah we're pretty fucked in Iowa right now.
People whose homes have been under water are trying to sneak back into them (not allowed bc of likely structural damage); the National Guard are arresting folks, and so on. That's north of me, but on the Cedar River, not the Iowa.
The Iowa is out of its banks and the spillway at the dam is over 700 feet (!!!) and everything is pretty much a lake. Interstate was closed until yesterday ( water over it & bridges being undercut).
Living on a hill ftw.
And sandbags everywhere else. Apparently we're gonna be fine now and th NG are moving the sandbags farther down river to Burlington or somewhere.

Yep, pretty much.
It's a mess. There are 99 counties in Iowa and eighty-something of them (haven't heard latest update) are now declared State and Federal Disaster Areas.
Lotsa businesses in our burbs are gone baby gone.
The 1993 Biggie was supposed to be "The One Hundred Year Flood". 15 years later we get the "500 Year" one?
God hates Iowa.
I almost feel guilty because while we've been somewhat scared and a lot inconvenienced for a very short bit, we haven't really had anything in our family to get too shook about : all our houses & people & animals & stuff are fine. My friend Mike however, is flooded outta his house,AGAIN -- along with his wife, 6 yr old son and new baby. He says they're gonna move this time.
Sigh.

| | | I'm glad your house is safe, sorry about your friend. I have a friend in Burlington, but he fortunately lives on a hill and has not been affected.
Iowa has indeed suffered bad this June. Western Iowa got horrendous tornadoes and central and eastern Iowa have this flood now. I do not envy Culver's job. Hopefully this won't happen again for another 500 years. |

Thanks, hon.
I don't envy the Gov either, but: Yanno, when they call Iowa The Land Between Two Rivers they are not, and at the same time are, totally wrong. More like, "Two Rivers on the borders and at least Three Other Major River Threats". Yikes. Not to mention tornadoes every now & then.
The state government is insisting that "There is money for this" with regard to clean-up and disaster relief, rebuilding, and such.
We'll see. I remember what a FUBAR it was for a while in 1993.
Kind of a funny: Our bank parking lot got totally inundated & was under water bigtime. OF COURSE the Mother-in-law absolutely had to go there right damn now, to get her lock-boxes outta the vault. Dunno what she thought was gonna happen to them. So: JB's sister had to take her there, park 4 businesses away, and wade thru water up to her ass to get the only bank employee there (he was sandbagging) to open said vault.
Then of course the M-I-L was just sure he must have stolen some money out of it bc he was in there ALONE WITH IT OMG!!
Heh. The MIL has a tendency towards The Overwrought Widow Syndrome. I lol'd but JB was mad. Oops.
It's fine now, we counted everything, put a list of what was in them on top of each box (cause she WILL forget! ) and deposited them in another(dry!) branch of said bank. JB took a whole day off work to do this and was SO not impressed.

| | | wow, you remembered me!
i am fine and safe and drying out.
i live like 2 minutes from the mississippi just up the hill, luckily, but we did end up with maybe 6 inches of water in the basement.
trying to get ANYWHERE is a chore due to detours, etc and lots of businesses are underwater
they are saying its worse than 93 but I know we dont have it nearly as bad here as in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids (I'm in Davenport).
You'd think by now we'd be used to it but meh.
For some reason we were still taken by surprise. People just weren't expecting it to be this bad. I think they'll get it worse further down river though.
It's kind of funny how many people have gone down just to take pictures of it. I don't get the morbid curiosity

S.A.M.E. weather alerts are usually the first to go out before TV and radio or even the local siren gets up and going.
Very handy with the alarm when sleeping, but can be a curse too if it's just a watch or advisory. Better safe than sorry though. |

| | | You're welcome. It's a Midland WR-100B. I see them on the website and around for 50ish or so, but hit that roof torn Wal-Mart when they get back in business and you can usually find them for 30 there. They have a more expensive model that does nothing more than just add AM/FM radio. Not worth the extra expense.
It comes with a power adapter but can also take 3xAA batteries incase you lose power. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
