| | | Survey on migration (PLEASE HELP!) I'm writing an essay entitled 'The influence of media on attitudes to migration' and I wonder if any of you would be willing to help me out by responding to a fairly short survey on the subject.
Any responses will be anonymously presented, in a statistical format, in the essay. The name of this website wont be mentioned as the source, and no personally identifiable information will be used.
If anyone wants to take part but would prefer not to post their responses publicly, I'd be glad to receive responses via PM.
You're welcome to add your personal thoughts and/or discuss the subject beyond the fairly limited choices of answers, but note that it wont be used in the essay.
Many thanks in advance to any and all who take part.
___________________________________________ SURVEY: 1. To what extent to you approve of economic migration to your country of residence?
(Please choose from the following responses: Strongly approve / Approve / No preference / Disapprove / Strongly disapprove / Don't know) 2. To what extent to you approve of the migration of those who seek refuge/asylum to your country of residence?
(Please choose from the following responses: Strongly approve / Approve / No preference / Disapprove / Strongly disapprove / Don't know) 3. What effect do you feel migration to your country of residence has on the following: i) Economy ii) Employment iii) Education iv) Culture v) Health
(Please give a separate answer to each from the following responses: Very positive / Positive / No effect / Negative / Very negative / Don't know) 4. To what extent do you think your feelings on migration are influenced by the media?
(Please choose from the following responses: Strongly influenced / Somewhat influenced / Not at all influenced / Don't know) 5. What news source do you use most regularly? - TV (news/current affairs) - Radio - Newspapers - Magazines - Internet - Other (please specify)
(Please choose only one of the above, i.e. the one you use most frequently) (It is probably worth mentioning, as a footnote to the final question, that I'm aware that each of those media categories encapsulate many different political persuasions. To ask everybody what particular news source they use most would probably yield some interesting responses, but little of statistical use on an international level. So I have chosen to look for broader patterns between different forms of media instead. I hope that clarifies the purpose of the question, as I imagine some of you may have wondered about it.)

-Woody Guthrie | I see. Thanks for that. His comment makes a bit more sense to me now.
I could have used the term "immigration" equally, seeing as that alone is what is being dealt with in the survey, but the essay will deal with migration as a whole (immigration and emigration) so I decided to keep the wording consistent. And since the word "immigrant" almost seems to have a negative connotation amongst some people, as a result of their views, I thought I'd go for a more neutral wording of the concept.
Any others willing to take part?

Strongly Approve 2. To what extent to you approve of the migration of those who seek refuge/asylum to your country of residence?
Approve
[I don't always know that New Zealand is the best possible option for some refugees who come here, thinking more of them, and their lives, than of "us", but I approve of taking refugees.] 3. What effect do you feel migration to your country of residence has on the following: i) Economy
Very positive ii) Employment
Very positive [Our recent booms in fields like construction clearly coincided with increased migration and population growth] iii) Education
Positive [I wish some of my kids were less racist, and exposure can only help them... plus South African kids are always really disciplined. We need more of them!] iv) Culture
Positive. [Except when it comes to sport, and then it is Extremely Positive] v) Health
No effect 4. To what extent do you think your feelings on migration are influenced by the media? Somewhat influenced [I read both pro and anti immigration stories at times, and consider the information in those articles. My personal feeling is that pro- articles tend to have facts and figures outlining how our country and economy is benefiting, whereas anti- articles contain more stories of isolated incidents, vague scaremongering and opinions from "interest groups", and spurious figures from other countries, or statistics taken out of context. I don't read the New Zealand asian press, or other sources catering specifically to immigrant communities, which might have more aggressively and passionately pro-immigration articles] 5.
