I've not noticed Obama playing on white guilt, from the little that I've followed. And to be honest, white guilt isn't very hard to circumvent. I don't suffer from it. I doubt a lot of people did before they first heard of it. Most people, to my knowledge, are aware that what their great-great-great-grandparents did isn't their fault and that they shouldn't feel guilty about it.
So I don't believe that anyone will vote for Obama purely because they'd feel guilty if they voted for a white guy. I think this is an attempt to make people think that that's why they're voting Obama, so that they're feel like race traitors or some stupid thing, and maybe, just maybe, a few of them might vote for Nader.

Yeah, I noticed that and it also seemed to me he was saying that black male politicians are 'acting white' if they don't speak in those southern-baptist-preacher cadences, which is presumably the only way black people are allowed to be articulate?

Probably nothing different. Probably nothing markedly worse or better. America flips a coin. If a black candidate gets in without being exceptionally wonderful, it's still better than getting no black president because people don't want to be seen to have been tricked into voting for a black guy out of white guilt.

regardless, obama -- or rather, his camp -- are not idiots. if jesse jackson, al sharpton, & every other black poltician fell because they played into the dominant ideal of white guilt, then obama would have to be a grade-a idiot to follow the same foot-steps.
playing into white guilt doesn't have to mean standing at the pulpit screaming "DOWN WITH THE WHITE MAN!!! WHERE DA WHITE WOMEN AT??". rather, this is a subtle form of white guilt. if he was straight up innocent, he -- or again, his "camp" -- wouldn't release one liners about such 'racist' comments. they'd actually just flat-out ignore it. which is smthing they haven't done this whole entire campaign. you can try to say "OBAMA NEVER TLKD ABOUT RACE", but its not true. or.. maybe it is. but he only escapes on a technicality. which is a vry black man thing to do.

I don't think anyone actually said that Obama "never talked about race", just that he didn't play on white guilt. Some people WILL consider any mention of black people to be playing on their white guilt, but you can't help those people.
