A junior high school boy leaped in front of a train and died, apparently after becoming worried about his grades at school, police said.

The 14-year-old jumped from a platform at JR Ochanomizu Station into the path of a Chuo Line express train traveling between Takao and Tokyo stations at about 6 p.m. on Thursday. He died soon afterwards.

Police said a message resembling a suicide note was found in the student's bag, and they suspect he committed suicide after becoming worried about his grades.

Express trains on the line were halted after the accident until about 6:50 p.m., affecting about 44,000 passengers.

How sad.

I'm sorry but those FUCKING asians need to lighten up about their perfect grades and their perfect fcking kids. It's really sickening. Way too much pressure is places on these kids and clearly it's unhealthy.

More than 20 years ago, when I wanted to die over my grades, I looked up ‘suicide’ in the encyclopedia. It specifically referenced Japanese students. Just the other day I randomly came across an article about Scarsdale, which is not exactly where I’m from, but close enough (geographically and culturally) to work as a comparison, in the real estate section of the NYT. Some guy who was moving there was quoted as saying it was for the schools, and even mentioned that it’s hard on the kids because of the pressure, but that it was worth it. They didn’t ask his kid.

I read an article a while back that asians, specifically women, have an alarmingly high suicide rate than any other race. It's a disturbing trend. It must be hard to be good at math. (I'm asian who happens to not be good at math.)

i'm okay w/ sacrificing a few japs if it means robots for all of the western world.

that really annoys me. Its usually my trains that people leap in front of and it either prevents me getting to work meaning i have to use a days holiday or it stops me getting home. Really annoying. Sorry, i lack sympathy for jumpers.. not so much cardigans.. oh ho ho.

This kind of thing is ridiculously sad. Its insane how much pressure (posh) kids worldwide are under to suceed. I work as a private tutor at the moment, and one family is paying the agency I think about £35 an hour for me to come three times a week and tutor their kid for geography GCSE. He is already at private school (and a good one at that), he isn't doing the subject for A-level and the reason they employed me was that he got a B in his mock GCSE. Its like- WTF, the world won't end for him if he gets ONE B in his GCSEs (he is fine for every other subject). What a stupid amount of pressure and money to waste for nothing. Obviously I haven't told them this though because I really need the cash.

I've always thought it could be a good racket to find a kid who is already awesome but has parents who pressure them and pay through the nose for tutorials. I could charge loads of money, I'm a qualified teacher. Cash on teh side.

Do it! There are loads of agencies and they love proper teachers. I get tutoring work on the basis of having a first from Oxford, which is stupid because that in no way equates to any teaching skills, and I can get about £30-35 an hour for GCSE and £40-45 an hour for A-level. I reckon proper teachers could stick at least a tenner on both of those prices.

I'll wait until I've moved... the only current contenders are kids at the school where I teach, so it would be a bit odd... and they might want me to help them during lunch breaks or something... but when I move to somewhere else, I'll see how it goes.

Whilst I was at college a girl hung herself because she had convinced herself that she would fail her A levels (even though she was predicted to get A grades) it was really sad.

Yeah, that is sad.
Some people don't get that although good grades help, they aren't everything.
