and just as a sidenote, part of why i'm so forceful about this...i'm a very skinny girl with an underweight bmi who actually TRIES to maintain a healthy weight which often times means FORCE FEEDING MYSELF. and i hate the pro-ana stance because it taints all of us with the same sick, obsessive brush. fuck that.

I don't think anyone here is pro-ana, just not anti-pro-ana sites. I mean, they suck, but a lot of things suck that we have to put up with. I don't think it is one of those "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem" things, as I doubt anyone would be seeking out pro-ana sites if they weren't anorexic already.

doesn't really matter if the people seeking out pro-ana sites are anorexic. if anything, that's almost worse. why would you allow people with a devestating mental illness encourage each other's distruction? because anorexia isn't just extreme dieting - it is a mental fucking illness. we're meant to try to protect and help those people, not let them tear each other down and starve themselves to death.

i am all for freedom of speech, but i also believe that we have an obligation to protect people who cannot protect themselves.

To be fair, I don't know who makes pro-ana sites. Aren't they mostly other anorexics? Where would you end this? I mean, can an anorexic have a blog? Or does s/he only get to have one if s/he spends every sentence of it saying how awful having anorexia is?

I know anorexia is a mental illness. All I was saying before was that I don't think a pro-ana site is ever going to persuade someone who isn't already anorexic to "convert". I mean, maybe I'm crediting everyone with too good a self-image, but to a normal person they just look fucking ridiculous.y

I don't really see why pro-ana sites should be banned but nothing else that is bad for your heatlh should. Should pro-smoking websites be banned? Pro-drugs? I can't see how this will stamp out the problem, instead it will just become a big underground thing with lots of anorexics claiming no one understands them and its all a big conspiracy against them.

When I was suffering from anorexia I didn't need those sites, I didn't need "inspiration" or whatever, I just did not eat. Period. I had a mental issue and it had nothing to do with food really. I find that those girls are kind of anorexic wanna be's, they want to have the disorder but they actually don't, they just have body issues and are insecure. I can't explain myself better, hopes it makes some sort of sense.

Yeah, it's kinda like people who have "food intolerances" and are more pathetic about them than people with life-threatening allergies. Some people have something wrong with them, and some are so desperate to have something wrong with them because they need so badly to feel special. They'd rather be interesting by killing themselves than have to deal with being boring.

Okay. I understand where this law is coming from, but I think it really only shows the massive misunderstanding about anorexia.

It is a MENTAL DISEASE, not a lifestyle choice like, ironically, some of the pro-ana/mia sites claim, and it needs to be addressed on a personal level. Blogs don't cause it just like laws won't cure it.
