This is what made me go batshit when I read that Erica Jong article endorsing Hilary – for the Baby Boomers (specifically, people in their early 60s right now, the technical birth-year-range doesn’t really match the cultural one) it is fucking always,
always their time. [Since I’d be the first to point it out if someone else was making this objection, yes, I do realize that any politician facing a primary challenge from a younger candidate that they would look especially bad calling unqualified would be saying the same things.] It was time to be having babies when they were all born, it was out of fashion when I was born. Everybody had to wake up and listen to the younger generation when they were in college, when I was in college I was considered to be imitating them by getting involved in activism (it was considered to be cute, as long as long as I did everything the way they did and gave them all the credit – certainly, I wasn’t meant to be having my say as a young person). When they were in their 40s, that was plenty old enough to be President, now, suddenly, it’s not. I am only 20ish years younger than these people – if I have to wait for them all to die off to matter, I’ll be in my 80s. I’m sure when I’m in my 60s, being in your 80s will be where it’s at, and equally sure that it will be considered too old to matter by the time I get there.
