I haven't read a full story on it either, (been too busy at work and other stuff so I reallly have to cut back on my Internet). Anyway, everyone knows that they're both doing the "political positioning" thing re NAFTA. And even if they do renegotiate on labour and environmental regulations, I don't think Canada will be affected much at all (although Mexico really would).
The Clinton camp is getting desperate, but I can't say I really blame them. Still think she's the right choice despite everything. And I know there are many who say she's just looking after/cares about herself, but I don't get it. I think she has less to gain personally from being President than Obama does. Plus, I don't think she's trying to fool anyone, because at this stage in her life and career she
knows she can't fool anyone. I really do think she cares (as much as a politician can).
Obama hasn't gained momentum because of his policy differences with Clinton, or his resume. He's gotten ahead because he's been able to inspire people. (And because people are pissed at Clinton for voting for the Iraq war...which I think had a lot to do with her constituency, being a NEW YORK senator one year after 9/11. BTW, every time Obama jabs her for that it's pretty much a cheap shot because he didn't have a vote at that time, not being in the Senate yet. Plus, in 2004 he said he didn't know how he would have voted had he been put in that position).
I wish he would outline his detailed plan to rid Washington of the special interest groups/lobbyists.

My bf spent the weekend in Ohio helping out the Obama campaign and the stories he has to tell. Those towns in Ohio are utterly depressing. Going from a job making $25 an hour (factory closed down) to not even being able to get a job making $7 an hour because the place won't take you seriously (because they see your experience on your resume and wonder if your applying as a joke). It's so sad. Whichever of the three becomes president, I sure hope they don't forget about these people they're meeting on the trail. |
That
is very depressing. I remember back in uni one of my eco profs was going on about free trade and globalization, and that economies have to adapt and focus on their local strengths yadda yadda...sure, we should be a service-based economy, and all manufacturing should go where they pay people shit. (That was before all the service-based jobs started going en masse to India). Anyway, to them, human suffering from job losses is basically just another variable, say "z", in the "Economist's" formula.
I hope the Democrats get in and help these people.
