So what actually happens about the VP runner now? Does the Hillary camp just pick one? I'm assuming Obama is a write-off as having them both on the same ticket is too divisive.

It's a shame it couldn't have been a Hillary-Obama ticket, with Obama eventually becoming President after he had years of experience as the Vice-President.

I like them both, but I have to go with experience - and if I weren't Canadian, I'd be volunteering for Hillary's campaign.

I somehow don't trust Edwards...something about him makes me think that he wouldn't be up for the job.

i dont understand this "more experience" thing. obama has been in senate since 05. hilary not much more. do you think bc she served as first lady it should count as "experience/" well then shouldnt obamas decade of govt service count as well?

I'm beginning to wonder if people realize that Obama actually served as a state senator for several years before becoming a national senator. and i know that state senators don't have the overwhelming task national senators do, but there's more responsibility there than being a first lady.

of course her years as first lady count as experience...and even if not "official" it holds a heck of a lot more weight than serving on a State's senate.

She was no Laura Bush

I don't necessarily know that she didn't say anything else, I've been well over Gloria for a long time. But the point at which I was young and unworldly enough to take her very seriously does pretty much coincide with the Thatcher era, or at least the early part of it. (ETA: rozalia qual posted whileI was writing)

There are a few decent points - I don't believe that a woman with Obama's exact resume and style could be a serious presidential contender, and I even think that it is correct that accurately pointing out sexism is more politically dangerous than doing the same with racism - but overall I'm not happy with that editorial. The hell Hillary doesn't have masculinity to prove, the problem as I see it is that she has to prove her masculinity and her femininity, and that's why, like I said in the other thread, there is no possible acceptable demeanor for a female candidate. But seeing that doesn't mean I have to support her, it just means if I don't it won't be because I think she's either 'cold and unwomanly' or 'weak and womanly.'

I don't like bringing up the difference in when blacks and women got the vote either. Although a lot of 19th century feminists cut their activist teeth in the abolition movement, there is also a shameful history of campaigning for the female vote on the idea that white women's votes would cancel out black men's (then, as now, somehow all of the blacks are men, and all of the women are white).
Thank you so much for posting this. I don't think I could have responded as well. I also had a very large problem with Gloria's decision to focus on gender. Because lord knows if Obama was white, it wouldn't even be a question about him winning.

She was more than just a first lady. Its commonly assumed she had lots of input in policy making when Bill was president. Bill & Hillary were often called co-presidents. Her office was located in the West Wing of the White House, right were the Oval Office is. She's also commonly assumed to have played major roles in Bill's election campaigns. She was possibly the most influential first lady since Eleanor Roosevelt.

In my opinion it doesn't. I suppose it depends on what you're looking for as far as "experience."

In '74 she was part of a committee that assisted congress in researching impeachment procedures against Richard Nixon. Fresh out of law school she got right into the hornets nest of American politics.

I know what you mean. Well, first off, sometimes he seems softer than a new born kitty. Also I didn't like how he kinda ganged-up on Hillary on the debate, practically high-fiving Obama at one point ...

If Obama was white his 'change' schtick wouldn't wash. In my opinion he talks of change and because of his colour and youth people assume he will be, so he doesn't need to back it up with anything solid.

so fresh out of law school she was interested in bringing someone down.

from wiki
After high school, Obama moved to Los Angeles, where he studied at Occidental College for two years.[23] He then transferred to Columbia University in New York City, where he majored in political science with a specialization in international relations.[24] Obama received his B.A. degree in 1983, then worked at Business International Corporation and NYPIRG before moving to Chicago to take a job as a community organizer.[25] As Director of the Developing Communities Project, he worked with low-income residents in Chicago's Roseland community and the Altgeld Gardens public housing development.[26] He entered Harvard Law School in 1988.[27] In 1990, The New York Times reported his election as the Harvard Law Review's "first black president in its 104-year history".[28] He completed his J.D. degree magna cum laude in 1991.[29] On returning to Chicago, Obama directed a voter registration drive.[29] As an associate attorney with Miner, Barnhill & Galland from 1993 to 1996, he represented community organizers, discrimination claims, and voting rights cases.[30] He was a lecturer of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1993 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004.[31]

State legislature

Obama was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996 from the state's 13th District in the south-side Chicago neighborhood of Hyde Park.[32] In 2000, he made an unsuccessful Democratic primary run for the U.S. House of Representatives seat held by four-term incumbent candidate Bobby Rush.[33] He was reelected to the Illinois Senate in 1998 and 2002, officially resigning in November 2004 following his election to the U.S. Senate.[34][35] As a state legislator, Obama worked with both Democrats and Republicans in drafting successful legislation on ethics and health care reform.[36] He sponsored a law enhancing tax credits for low-income workers, negotiated welfare reform, and promoted increased subsidies for child care.[37] Obama also led the passage of legislation mandating videotaping of homicide interrogations, and a law to monitor racial profiling by requiring police to record the race of drivers they stopped.[37][38] During his 2004 general election campaign for U.S. Senate, Obama won the endorsement of the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police, whose president credited him with having been "immensely helpful in working with police organizations" on death penalty reform.[39] He was criticized by a rival pro-choice candidate in the Democratic primary and by his Republican pro-life opponent in the general election for having voted either "present" or "no" on anti-abortion legislation.[36][40]

All politicians are interested in power and the spotlight; they wouldn’t be able to go through what you have to go through to get elected if they weren’t. It doesn’t automatically preclude genuinely wanting to help people, and there are better and worse politicians, but a more-than-average interest in power is a base they all share. And Nixon cut his own throat – I’m not going to ascribe evil motives to working on that impeachment. Would it have been more caring to say ‘Hell, if the president wants to cheat when he doesn’t need to and do it badly at that, we probably don’t deserve any better?’

That's fine. But choosing to ignore her years as first lady is based more on your personal bias against her than on facts.
