it's caucus time!

nobody else is sitting at home, with CNN on, in serious anticipation?

with 5% of precincts reporting, edwards is leading with 36% of the vote. but that's just currently.

CNN has called Huckabee as the Republican winner - he won by a good percentage (10-15%).

the Democrats are in a 3 way tie, all with 32%.

sad times, Obama is the projected winner of the democratic primary in Iowa.

i think the ticket will be Obama-Edwards for the democrats.
or Clinton-Edwards.

as a Clinton-Obama ticket is HIGHLY unlikely.

I don't get how the whole "primary" system works...

Huckabee gives me the creeps.

"Huckabee's victory can be attributed to his overwhelming support among evangelical voters and women..."

I equally liked Clinton and Obama until the whole Oprah thing - now I'm rooting for Hillary.

Iowa caucuses 101: Arcane rules have huge impact on outcome
Story Highlights
Iowa caucuses start at 7 p.m. CT Thursday night
Candidates have to show up at caucus sites to vote
Candidates must have 15 percent of the voters to be "viable"
(CNN) -- The arcane rules governing Thursday's Iowa Democratic caucuses will test even the most organized campaign, but mastery of the process could launch a candidate on a path to the White House.

Most Americans are familiar with how elections work -- secret ballots, an 18-year-old age requirement, all-day voting.

But that's not how the Iowa Democratic caucuses on Thursday will work.

When the Democratic caucuses begin at 7 p.m. CT sharp in school gymnasiums, libraries, churches, farm houses and other locations in the 1,781 precincts across the Hawkeye state, step one will be to stand up and be counted.

"What you'll do is get up out of your seat and you'll go walk to the corner or space by the wall designated for the candidate of your choice," Chelsea Waliser, an organizer for Sen. Barack Obama, told potential caucus-goers during a recent Obama rehearsal caucus. Interactive: A step-by-step look at how the caucuses work »

After this first step, party officials will determine if a candidate meets the 15 percent "threshold" requirement.

Supporters of candidates making up less than 15 percent of the vote in a particular precinct will have the option of making their vote count by voting in the second tally for a "viable" candidate -- one who got at least 15 percent of the vote on the first tally.

It is particularly interesting to watch what happens between the first and second tallies at the Iowa Democratic caucuses, as viable candidate camps vie for the votes of the unviable. It's one of the few times in American politics where voters directly interact with each other. Interactive: Learn what 'caucus' and other political jargon mean »

During the "persuasion" time in between tallies, the precinct captain for the viable candidates sends a person over to each group that failed to meet the threshold to convince them to support their candidate. Once everyone has decided where to vote, a second tally is taken, and the results are then sent to Democratic state party headquarters -- not electronically but via ordinary mail.

The Iowa Democratic Party keeps the total vote tally a secret and only releases the percentage of delegates won by each candidate, so it all comes down to how many delegates each precinct has, not the popular vote. Watch how the delegates will calculated »

By comparison, the rules governing the 1,781 Republican caucuses, which are held on the same night as the Democratic caucuses, are pretty simple. The Republican caucuses will use a secret ballot, and, since there is no viability threshold, each vote is simply tallied and the number of votes each candidate gets is reported to party headquarters.

The ability of a candidate's supporters to use the persuasion period to win over second-choice voters could be a key factor deciding who comes out on top Thursday night.

"You hit that floor and work it and try to get them. It's like a fun game," Clinton supporter Ed Winfry of Sioux City, Iowa, said last month.

Because the rules are so complicated, organization is key. Each campaign needs to get its supporters to the caucus locations by 7:00 p.m. sharp. If they are late, they will not be allowed to vote.

And Iowa's unpredictable winter weather could be a factor and dissuade a candidate's supporters from traveling to the caucus sites.

Democratic caucus rules also make polling very difficult. Unlike a regular election, when a voter can immediately leave the polling place after he or she casts her ballot, a caucus-goer may have to spend hours caucusing before his or her vote counts. Plus, caucus-goers without a viable group may end up switching their support to a candidate who had been trailing in standard polls.

I am seriously excited that Obama won Iowa. My family started talking today, big Hilary supporters...I am not against her, it's just that Obama makes me excited about elections, he makes me care more than I would normally.

I don't know much about it either cuz I always considered her representing corporate interests, and other elites, and haven't taken much time to read what she says, but from I know, she avoids answering tough questions. In other words, she's not forthright.

Paul got some votes, 10 percent... he even got 2 Del ... which is 2 more than the Amazing Vanishing Trick Guiliani. Of course the media doesn't even mention Paul in any headlines, or articles...

The line on the news this morning was (almost verbatim) "Huckabee's record on foreign policy is terrible, but clearly, no-one cares". I have no idea what it means, but it sucks because now I can't say "I Heart Huckabee "

But yeah, I was going to ask someone to explain what a caucus is, but someone already has, and I still don't get it. The main impression I got from reading it is that at least the first stage isn't a secret ballot, but I might be totally wrong there.

I remember how much I laughed when George W. Bush got the 2000 ticket over McCain. Never underestimate how many whackjobs there are in the US.

I'm not keen on Edwards at all. He seems to symbolise everything the Democrats have been doing wrong since 2000. Even having him for VP seems a bit redundant, someone that bland behind Hilary or Obama will just get washed away and he won't do his job of making conservative middle-americans feel safer about voting for them. The Dems really need to shoot the moon this time and try and energise the more apathetic parts of the population rather than trying to placate Republican waverers.

hilary clinton will be DEMOLISHED in the presidential campagin if she is the democratic nominee as millions of people who normally wouldnt give a shit would go out and vote just to vote against her. most of america sees her as a vile and dishonest.

obama doesnt have that against him. he has being black against him, but frankly, whites are less and less the majority and there are far fewer racist morons, so i dont know exactly how much that counts against him. another thing that might count against him is the muslim history. despite the fact that his father rejected the muslim faith, which is considered to be more heinous than being a christian in the first place, most people in america arent educated enough to know that, and if the republicans start pointing fingers at him whispering MUSLIM, that could be very bad.

im thrilled that obama won this caucus. im totally in love with him and he energizes me in a way that no one has since jerry brown.

and spas youre so right about the general american public. i never thought in a million years bush jr would be elected the first time, and then when he was elected the SECOND time, i realised that i had to underestimate the intelligence of ameria in order to accurately predict what they might do.
