| | | I found it interesting. But why is it "funny"? I'm annoyed NZ and Australia couldn't make the list, given bloody Cyprus found its way in. As well as "EU and friends", they should have included all the OECD nations.

| | | Just recently Mr. Wildwoman watched 'Inherit the Wind,' which he had never seen before - I saw it in school when we read the play. It makes me crazy to realize that 40-odd or whatever years ago, when the play/movie originated, it was considered a settled issue, and now it's such a big deal again.
I don't know why it should have been a big deal when I was in school 20-odd years ago. Although the controversy wasn't huge in my school, upper Weschester county not really being a hotbed of Christian kooks, despite all my other problems with it, the teacher did feel compelled, whether on her own or at request I do not know, to mention that there is no reason Darwin and the Bible couldn't both be right. And I certainly don't get why it seems to have only gotten worse since then. *sigh*

You guys seem to be very stuck on literal interpretation of the Bible. If you treat the Bible as a handbook, a guide told through parables as to how best to live our lives, then there's no reason why the two can't coexist; factual inaccuracies about superficial things like the age of the Earth don't detract from the message, anymore than they do with, say, 1950s sci-fi. It's when you get someone trying to tell you that the Earth is less than 10,000 years old, and taking a single text as proof of this, that you have a problem. I don't see any harm in saying that science and God can co-exist - very few scientists actually disagree with that because they can't within the boundaries of science - but that doesn't seem to be enough for some elements of the "religion side", and they've somehow gotten into positions of influence in America in a way that isn't reflected elsewhere. |

| | | I don't get it, I just don't. I feel classist and elitist and other uncomfortable things for saying this, but I never, ever, ever, want to leave New York City fucking ever.
Having said that, I will also say that I'm not sure it is as widspread as it looks, or if another ones of those things where the people who are serious about it are serious about it to the exclusion of everything else in the entire world, which makes it look more widespread than it really is. I guess a middle-aged American who has copped to being afraid of leaving NYC is in no position to really determine that, but I do know that it is a pretty successful tactic.
I believe that Thumper had also argued against evolution, or at least stated herself to be on that side, but I haven't seen her around here in a while.
