While I don't agree with her treatment, I do think it was incredibly naive of her to name the teddy bear that, regardless of whether the kids suggested it. Even if she didn't mean it to be offensive, she should have been sensitive to others interpretations of it, especially in a country like Sudan.

In the current climate, with the danish cartoons etc, you'd think someone would be more careful about these kind of things.

On another note, I think I'm going to take some kind of toy to school and let 9R name it whatever they want, and see if I can maybe foster some kind of crazy current events discussion. Maybe I should take along Princess Ai?

Quite. I do know that in some North African countries, it's common for goat herders to name their sheep after themselves, but as a Westerner I'd be just that little bit wary if it were put to me to name a teddy bear the same name as the prophet. I know it sounds like a judgement call, but if I were put in that position I'd kinda delay the process of naming the toy until I got the full skinny from those truly in the know.

I hate to sound intolerant, but no. Why should we be asked to be sensitive to them? They're being paranoid and intolerant. You can call her naive if you want, but really, if people are naming their kids after Mohammed, why should anyone be expected to assume that naming a bear after one of those kids would get you sent to prison and lashed?

The only reason we feel we have to walk on eggshells around Islam is because we have this idea that we can't expect them to be as tolerant and sophisticated as us. We can pretend we're doing it to be nice or whatever, but all it is is that we think of them as savages. If a white person kicked up that kind of fuss (take naming a teddy bear Jesus as an example?) we'd laugh them out of town. Why should we assume that their faith means more than them or that they're incapable of viewing any situation objectively, when we expect members of our own culture to do so?

He was stupid, violent and delusional - he got a message from an angel (delusional) and raised an army to forcibly take Mecca and convert the inhabitants (violent). Given that he was also illiterate, he can't even claim "hey, I also wrote the peaceful bits of the Quran that say you have to be nice to Christians and that killing innocents is a sin", because obviously someone else did that later on.

It's not his real name, it's his provisional name. Like the names that nurses give to babies in IC whose parents haven't bothered to name them yet. I'm nursing a Dalek to adulthood. When I adopt a full-size silver one (apparently a guy in my old hometown makes really accurate ones for about 500 dollars), my little foot high black Dalek baby is getting totally neglected. :angelina:
