I'm sure I read somewhere that it's almost 100% uptake amongst those who have kids, so probably the most widely subscribed-to benefit in the country, unfortunately. It's not just the folks "living on benefits" who are affected. Everyone with a kid who's still in education is, I gather.
Not that I'm suggesting we should be ragging on those people who do live on benefits. Just sayin'.
Actually, what was your point anyway? I think I've missed it. Are you suggesting that the folks who whine about those on benefits should actually be glad that the "scroungers'" bank details are possibly in a vulnerable position? If so, bit of a daft point, is it not?

I don't really have a point. Having worked in a local government office, it's very hard for me to be all angry and shocked by this though. I'd be surprised if it doesn't happen a whole load more often, actually. Our internal post was fucking shit, I stopped using it in the end because it was so monumentally gay.
I think it's pretty retarded that people are trying to have ministers resigning over it and all the usual bollocks, as it's almost definitely entirely the responsibility of the immediate superior of the guy who sent them off, because they were either too pussy or too lazy to arrange to send the information in the proper format.
Have the discs actually been found, incidentally? |

| | I don't think they have been found. In fact, I'd read that a further 6(?) HMRC disks had gone walkies too, but I haven't really been keeping up with it all.
There was an interesting article on the BBC website, where a former employee had anonymously divulged what the setup was like within the HMRC, and this person didn't have many good things to say either. Rooms stacked full of unopened mail, and whatnot.
It's probably unrealistic to expect everything to be completely perfect all of the time. But for years, amongst the accountants I've worked alongside, the HMRC have been absolutely notorious for their complete lack of organisation, awful co-ordination, and general unhelpfulness. This is not at all anything new to me either, but I never expected anything on this scale. Granted, you have to cut these guys some slack, considering they're dealing with the details of the vast majority of the people in the country in one form or another, but they're honestly just a complete mess, and that's coming from me, someone completely external to it all. I don't expect resignations, but if this doesn't come as a signal for improvements then I don't know what will.
Some people have cited this debacle as a prime reason for our country not to go anywhere near ID cards. I'm almost inclined to agree. Mind you, the passport agency seems to get on OK. Or maybe they just haven't managed to cock up publicly yet?
