This is just a proxy though for political domination. America and her Allies rule through institutions. The moment those institutions stop delivering political payoff they will be jettisoned. You can see evidence all the time of how little they "really" matter when the world court or the U.N. indicts America. America shrugs her shoulders and says 'so what'. Which is quite fine in my opinion.
As for whether the west *should* police the world. I dont know. It begs the obvious question: does the world need policing?
From a security standpoint, there are benefits to Western dominance. The West is a very benign hegemon. Historically speaking. I venture to say that given the alternatives, the west is a more favourable option as global policman. People are naturally suspicious of the motives of Western states when they worry about armament around the world, rightly, because there can be ulterior motives, but nevertheless Iran, Syria, North Korea having nukes is not a good idea.
Another thing is poverty reduction. The only way end poverty in Africa: Recolonise Africa. sad but true.
