| | | My god, that's shocking.
They should really have interpreters at immigration control. The guy must have been terrified – his first ever plane flight, stuck there for 10 hours. Christ, his poor mother. |

| | | I suppose, he was getting far too rowdy and quite dangerous, but there was clearly no need to stun him at that moment, never mind a second time. They had several cops around him, they could easily have grabbed the man? And I find it rather amazing that the cop with the taser asked permission to stun him before they even approached him and discovered whether he was going to act out towards them or resist. Idk if it's just procedure that they have to ask for permission beforehand, just in case it's needed, but that looked like they went in with the objective of stunning him before they even stopped to figure shit out. He never even swung at them once! A policeman with sense would have just taken him to a secure area until a translator could arrive and find out what his problem was. Fuck, even arresting him would have been a smarter move. But no, these idiots come busting in like the heros they wish they were, ignoring fucking everything people were trying to tell them, and immediately decide to stun him. What planet are these guys on?
And whatever damned airline he was flying with should have tried to help him get on his way, well before it escalated to that. Or the immigration control people. How can a guy kick around for 10 hours in arrivals without at least one member of staff stopping for a moment to wonder why? And why the hell would they tell his mother he never arrived? To get rid of her?
Just bad shit all round. That's appalling.

| | | I was really shocked that it happened ... I've been in and out of YVR dozens of times, domestic and international flights, and I've always found the staff insanely helpful.
The PD's reaction to it is even more disgusting than the actual act. They lied about how they responded, saying they tried to communicate for 10 minutes when they tasered him after no more than 30 seconds, seized the video tape and refused to return it until legal action was threatened, tased the guy twice and then knelt on his neck, which is probably what killed him.
The investigation is supposed to go on for two years, and they're denying that the video is good evidence. They say it only captures one person's point of view. Excuse me? It's a fucking tape, completely unedited. I think the entire situation is sick.

| | | They made the decision to use the taser while walking thru the lobby before any interactions with this man. They were overheard. He had his arms up in surrender or whatever. While waiting the 8 minutes for paramedics to arrive, they did nothing, no cpr or anything to revive the man.
I really, really hope they get charged. |

I really, really hope they get charged. | As do I.
This is all over the news here. I found it really distressing that some police commissioner sent his grievances out to the man's family as well as the police officers' families. |

| | | I work near the *communal* radio where I am employed, and over the course of 3 hours I heard the Audio Clip from that Video played no less than 4 times. The only thing worse than the actual event is having to hear it over and over. Talk radio should be let out back and shot.
But re: the subject.
This case deals with two main problems, and we need more information about them before resolution can be found within either one.
The first problem is an aggressive, disgruntled man in the airport causing a scene who doesn't speak english.
There ARE interpreters at YVR as well as special phones that you can pick up and speak to someone if you need help and don't speak english. Why this man didn't use one or why one was not made available to him is still unknown. I'm sure all of this will unravel as the trial progresses.
The second problem is that we are arming airport security (people who, as someone else said, have a strong personal inclination towards the idea of "peacekeeper" or "hero") with lethal weapons that are not designated as such. As far as the cops are trained, tazers are considered the safe alternative. This is a huge problem because as this clearly illustrates, Tazers are not safe. Yet another situation which I'm sure will unravel as the fallout from this incident clears.
And yes, our Police would absolutely love everyone to forget this happened. They have an absolutely brutal history of doing really dumb things and then trying poorly to cover it up. |

I'm sure they've got pay phones in Poland, though, so he really ought to have just called his mum from one of those. It also may have been smart to pick up a translation guide before he came over, too. |
