| | | God. I just get so many bad reactions when I tell people I lived in America and I love that country and want to move there after I graduate. I'm so sick of their ignorance and of always having to defend myself.
They always go "Yeah.... I don't exactly like the American mentality". And I then ask "Oh. Where have you been in the U.S.?". Their answer is always "oh. I've never been there". And then I say "oh. well then I know enough.".
ha.
Such ignorance. Sure. Bush is a fuckhead. but let's not forget bush's approval rating is what...20% or sth at this point? The Americans don't like them either. And we all know the elections weren't exactly fair either.....
And what's the deal with Europeans saying they don't like "Americans". Really, Americans are Europeans and Africans. Slavery and the whole Manifest Destiny idea is our, the Europeans, fault. People seem to forget our ancestors started all of this.
And then there's of course the issue of "America has o culture". First of all, America is such a young country compared to for example Europe. There's some beautiful and fascinating American art any way. and there's also beautiful American art. Not as old as European art though...OBVIOUSLY. It's not like Americans can help that. but let's take a look at John Singer Sargent's work, or Peale, Cole, Church, H.O.Tanner....Shit. the list goes on and on. . Really? No culture?
And of course all the amazing 20th century American artists...
ah well. I could rant on and on. I'm just a little sick of always having to defend myself towards all these self-righteous Europeans. |

I go to a very snooty and rich and private school and we have uniforms, but a lot of choice. Girls can wear bermuda shorts, capris, or pants, all from the uniform store, and a polo shirt from the uniform store and there are like literally 50 different colors of polo shirts. Boys can wear pants or shorts, and the same shirts as the girls. We can wear whatever shoes we want.
We are supposed to wear a school sweater, but a lot of girls wear simple cardigans.
I like our uniforms, I never worry about what to wear and they look kinda cute. |

ah well. I could rant on and on. I'm just a little sick of always having to defend myself towards all these self-righteous Europeans. | It's cool to see someone so patriotic for America. I feel kind of the same way. And I'll admit America has tons of faults, but I HATE it when people in other countries just automatically hate America without really knowing about it.
I live in Miami, Florida, and 12% of the population is Caucasian American. All the people I'm around all day just constantly bash America. Constantly. I hate it. Especially because the people I'm talking about are spoiled rich teenagers with wealthy fathers from South American countries, living comfortably in America.
One boy from Venezuela is an American resident, not a citizen, and he says that he "fears becoming a citizen because he doesn't want to be thought of as an American". I assumed he wanted to show his Venezuelan roots, but he even said "no I just hate America".
And for culture, it's growing. The 20th century was an amazing time where music and art and literature sprung up. AND, a lot of the immigrants and people from other cultures living in America make up diversity. Sure, small town America is all white Christians maybe, but a lot of cities are diverse. Miami is made up of EVERYONE! |

| | | I don't really hate America, I do think it's behind the times a bit in comparison to Canada and Europe, when this country was originally settled as "the country for the free", and than later we're all like "fight for our freedom", "allowing {gays to marry/removal of school segragation/hippies/women to vote etc.} will destroy america" despite the fact it's supposed to be a free country that supports anyone's choice
I don't think I hate America, I just hate it's hypocritical past. There's still some hypocrisy and ass-backwards people but I suppose it's not as bad as it used to be. |

Happy thanksgiving! | o ok this place always was a corrupt democracy ok i feel much better knowing we were always on the wrong track instead of being corrupted later by dickheads
About that Native American thing, I learned they were basically constantly being thrown out west until there was nowhere left to go. So what is up with those school plays the first graders used to do about the "indians" and pilgrims sharing and being brotherly and shit?

I'm just a little sick of always having to defend myself towards all these self-righteous Europeans. | i completely agree with everything you said. it's a similar situation here in australia, a lot of people make the mistake of telling me they hate america/americans when they have never actually been there and know very little about the country or its citizens.
most australians would be surprised to find out that our countries are extremely similar. i really love the USA, and can not tolerate people making uninformed negative comments about it. ok... if you've been there and still hate it, then fine. but you can't hate something you have no personal experience with. repeating the opinions of other people as if they're your own is fucking irritating.

That doesn't surprise me. I like America, I'm fascinated by it. Well, I got relatives live there as well. But I hate Australia! Ya! Cuz Australia are wannabe AMericans... they proved that in the Sydney Olympics, they wanted the world to like em so bad, they want America to like em so bad it hurts, yer showing it right there with yer comment, trying to protect yer idols! ... well, Canada will always be Americas closest trading partner, so forget it. Yer not similar at all, and Americans will never fall for it. Americans will never like you... so .. move on.......
Also I don't like alligator hunters or wrestlers, or whatever it is you do down there, kangaroo boxing or whatever ... and crikey this and crikey that ... and Paul Hogan? What the hell is that? That the best you got?
What a Godforsaken desert!! ... only thing I like about Australia is Ayres Rock and the aboriginals ... but Aussies? Nope. Funny-talking Try-hards......... |

Happy thanksgiving! | I know, it's a perfect example of irony. The puritans came over to escape religious persecution, but then persecuted all the others that came over as well.
I quite like the whole Americana thing. My mother is from the South, and we visited a lot so even though I grew up in a very liberal city there was still that Southern thing. I'm not talking about racism and rednecks, I'm talking about the Americana rock n roll (sounds kinda ghey) and bluegrass and etc. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is a good example of what I'm talking about. And the blues! The blues is awesome! I think there is culture in America and people just don't realize it yet.
Right now politics are insane. The majority does not like Bush. I see more and more young people getting into the arts and music, protest stuff. I see teenagers sitting around in circles with their guitars and singing these folk rock songs about the government and all the corruption. I guess it could be like the '60s. My grandpa was in Vietnam, an officer even I think, and he said it's Vietnam all over again.
I also think the people of America make it what it is, obviously. Small town America, bible belt cities, they are some of the most closed minded people there are. Not just small town America either. I know this girl at my school who literally told us "I don't give a fuck about little Ethiopian kids picking my coffee beans as long as I get my caramel machiatto". And that's how so many people feel. She's just different because she said it out loud. So many people are so ignorant now.
I really can't wait for Election '08. My grandma says the country is going downhill because we have "a black and a woman" running for president. She's from different times and she is very old and kind of losing it so I don't push it, but it just shows that there are lots of people who feel that way. She also hates woman, says their stupid, and cuts Katie Couric's head off when she sees her picture in a magazine. She hates businesswoman especially, and it's pretty hilarious because my mother (her daughter in law) is a total feminist, modern, BUSINESSWOMAN! Who makes the same amount as my dad
I love mah momma
That was a long and rambling post, wasn't it? Ha
P.S. And today I'm goin' fishin' in the Everglades Respect the national parks! |

Actually the occurrence that triggered this was the US's edition of Amy Winehouse's Back to Black. They fucking removed "Addicted" because it was a motown-inspired song about cannabis. Are you kidding me? I have to order an import now because that was one of my favorites on the album.

| | | Everybody hates America, until:
You need our big fat tourist $$$ that float your economic boats;
or you need our weapons and manpower to come on in and help you when some other country that's even worse than us has invaded you...and if or when we do save you from THAT evil empire, you go back to hating us, of course.
Don't forget. There are many, many Americans that HATE what this country has become. Please remember that we are NOT what our regime is. Most of us are nice people who wanted nothing to do with it.
That's about as nicely as I can put it, but stop with the Eurohatin' of America already. | |
