I came here to see the KR discussion on Pakistan, and found none. How disappointing. Topping the list is zoanthropy's usual stuff which few people can relate to, as well as ZTed's usual meaningless liberal shit-stirring.
As Clove's caption used to say, "this above all?"
But back to the recent Pakistan developments.... Does anyone else see the irony of the Bush administration and Condoleeza Rice, and their communication (or what we know of these messages) to Musharraf?
I don't know too much about Pakistan, but I do know that separation from India was not a good thing for them. I've heard that there are more Muslims in India than the population of Pakistan (and they actually live in a democracy). It kind of makes you think why Indian Muslims fought so hard for an independant state in the first place.
As for Benazir Bhutto, isn't she like one of the most corrupt politicians ever?

i am no scholar in south asian history.
but i guess in principle/theory, the idea of setting up their own country (before corrupt politicians ruined it) was pretty good. i've read lots of stories where right-wing hindu parties in india, like shiv sena or hindutva or bjp, have treated the muslim minority horribly. there have been massacres on innocent muslims. textbooks in government based schools (during the years whenever these parties hold a lot of influence in daily politics) are biased towards them. et cetera.
i haven't been keeping up with the recent news of political developments in pakistan (i've only skimmed over a few articles), but there seems to be a lot of discussion about the recent state of emergency on this (south asian-centric) blog: Sepia Mutiny
you have to scroll down a bit to find the older articles, but it's still interesting to see other peoples' views on the issue.
I just find it mostly amusing in a bitter cycnical way, that you have got someone saying "Let's have democracy, but I will do everything in my power to make sure that the voice of the people is recorded as conveniently wanting ME in charge".

I dunno about ever ... but .. uhm ... it has to do with money laundering and Swiss bank accounts ... she was never tried although she was dismissed from office. Of course her and her hubby deny it, and say that it's a campaign by their enemies to get em ... documents are fabricated, blah blah. She is something of a reformer, at the same time ... What's the truth? I dunno.
M-af called elections just a day ago, I think? ... doesn't he usually then cancel em, or rig em or something like that, whips up fears, calls an Orange alert, whatever ... methods the same the world over. Probably gets his instructions straight from Cheney's office. USA never invade cuz of the nukes, and no oil, so he must know he can do as he likes.
I'd like to see some anti-Bush types really get into a tizzy over whether they are allowed to back him on this.
As for Bhutto, there are questions of corruption, but I do think she is in favour of democracy, and she has been handed a mandate by the people of Pakistan on more than one occasion, so I'm not totally anti-her. And I feel sorry about her Dad and all...

Judging from a few responses, I think a couple of you may have missed the weekend's news about Musharraf's declaration of "emergency rule", suspension of Pakistan's constitution and declaring martial law:
Dictator Musharraf has supposedly been helping Bush's "war on terror." But the guy is still a dictator, unwilling to give up anything that is a threat to his power.
Musharraf uses "terrorism" as his excuse to suspend Pakistan's constitution. Didn't y'all hear anything over the weekend about protests (and subsequent arrests) of Pakistani lawyers? This is some serious shit.
Yet another country in a state of instability in this region..... and of course the Bush administration's answer to foreign policy is the typical weak posturing. Such incompetence.... But you know, what else can Bush do except express his "disappointment"? I don't expect more, since our military is stretched so thin.... It's just more evidence that declaring war on Iraq in the first place was a BAD IDEA (which most liberals like myself already figured out on DAY ONE 2003 thankyouverymuch )

Just another thing to blame Bush for, it seems. The poor guy can't do anything right... damn Pakistanis.

United States has lost the war on Terror.... Just like it lost the war on drugs..
The Terrorist all know United States can NOT start a draft because of lack of qualified American males. U.S. is trying its best to overcome deficiencies by letting Illegal aliens enter the country..
This war is going to get worst and worst and more and more American soldiers are going to get killed.
Bush & Cheney do not have a clue about what to do about the Draft problem.
I guess Americans are believing the dream Bush & Cheney are selling to United States.. The Americans are buying it all up...
As Americans sit back and relax the terrorist are regrouping and reorganizing and plotting their next move...
If the terrorist take over Pakistan then they can launch the Pakistan Nuclear missles that can easily strike the United States.....
Bush & Cheney keep telling American that everything is OK and to be happy and don't worry....

“How do you function as a lawyer when the law is what the general says it is?” said a prominent Islamabad lawyer, Babar Sattar, who has a Harvard law degree.
Pssst Bush and Cheney want to give Pakistan a few more billions and billions of tax payers money. Bush & Cheney are hoping the extra money may scare away the terrorist from taking over Pakistan...
Ohmigosh I never knew Bush & Cheney are smart.... Really smart...
I just can not believe everyone in America freely voted for Bush and Cheney...
USA rather have a stable Pakistan than a free one ... though I don't know how stable it is ... M-af seems to know what he's doing, I mean, imagine holding power so long there.
I sure don't think Bush is disappointed ...
This idea that they want free-to-choose everywhere, it's a lie. If people are free to choose, they may choose anything ... it's common sense they don't want freedom outside ... they want to control the outside ...

Well, I know it seems odd to blame Bush for this too, but things the US does sometimes has a condoning effect on other global happenings. For example, using the "terrorist excuse" to impose military law.... Similarly, the US has already set a precedent by conveniently getting rid of habeas corpus and due process... I mean, what can Americans say to Musharraf when the country which counts "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" to its ideals, is violating human rights?
Well, March 2003 is when the most recent shit started really with world militarization when our lovely country decided to snub the UN and do whateverthehell it wants because we can.
Did anyone hear the news today that the US debt has reached an all-time high to the effect on 9 trillion dollars or something? A staggering amount. Pretty soon the Arabs and China will OWN our asses! Thanks again to asshole Bush and his petty squabbles/tyrranical quests that the "conservative" sector has so happily supported these past 7-8 years. Sycophants!
