Double moral at the Earth live show?

I don't want to be a party crasher here, but am I the only one that think that whole earth shit was pretty lame?

I mean of course it is for a good cause- but does anyone honestly think thoose superstars (that usues more electricity in ONE show than a normal houshold use in a year!) live that way?

I bet Madonnna took a private yet to the show, and I seroisly doubt that Cameron and Jessica Biel is sooo concerned about the enviroment that they want to turn down their thermostat a couple of degrees. And does anyone actually believe that any of thoose stars will drop some of the lights around their houses?

Don't get me wrong- it is very importnant that we start doing something about this but I can't help but being a bit cynical here.
And for the shows- why didn't they set an example, like NOT having a zillion of lights on during the day on stage!!

And finally, how many here thinks Al Gore flies with the regular flights? Raise your hand..

Ok, go a head, bash me now. I deserve it for being such an negative person.

I actually agree, it is rather weird to get people to save energy with a show that costs energy like hell.
What about flying the bands and their equipment around the world, the food and drinks stands, the mess from the food and drinks, all the people around the world watching their TVs....
It's quite weird indeed.

I don't really care one way or the other about this, but there is the counterpoint that if this raises awareness and people do start living their lives in a more environmentally aware manner, won't the positives outweigh the negatives?

My first reaction was cynical, but you have to wonder. I think it was done with the best of intentions.

Sure they had good intentions, but how many people will have to turn the heat down and switch to eco friendly lights etc. to balance out the energy wasting from 07-07-07?
This was all done with good intentions, but that doesn't make the way it was done right.

So if the awareness created by the concert taking place results in a reduction in carbon emissions that compensates for the emissions created by that concert and more, doesn't it then become justifiable?

i really think it was poorly executed.

not only did they spend a ridiculous amount of power and gas, they were also, most likely, preaching for the choir... i mean, out of those who watched these concerts, i bet that very few (if none) didnt already know about global warming and what can be done to lower your co2 emissions

redundant

I doubt that's true to be honest. There seems to be a fairly alarming amount of people out there who are barely aware of it as an issue at all. In fact, I can count myself as one of them. I watched An Inconvenient Truth and I do my best, but I can't say I fully understand what's going on.

that makes me really sad to hear. srsly, green house gasses and the mechanics of the green house effect are stuff that i learned about in 4th grade. and you just have to turn on the news (or even the weather) to hear about co2 emissions and the effect of that on the environment.

Madonna took some heat for some stock investments she's made.

Madonna Vows To Go Green After Criticism

Madonna has vowed to commit to an eco-friendly regime - after facing criticism over her "unethical" business interests. The Evita star was rebuked for her 'environmentally unaware' investments in oil companies and the "10th all-time most toxic company," aluminum producer Alcoa. But Madonna insists, following her involvement with Saturday's Live Earth event, she has been forced to re-evaluate her stance on climate change. Her spokesperson says, "Madonna's agreement to sing at the Live Earth event is merely one of the first steps in her commitment to being environmentally responsible. She is educating herself and her family and has begun to make changes around her that reflect her awareness and concern for the future of the planet."

idont think it was done with good intentions
its put on bythe worst perpetraitors of the whole thing
and it turns around and convinces us to blame ourselves when for so many years we were led in that direction to create the problem on purpose
the whole thing is super shady
and especially now its even being used a diversion
why do you even wanna svae the planet if it just allows for the perpetual destruction and killing of so many others just so you can have some fly kicks and whatnot
maybe the planet is cosmically designed to be destroyed (to make way for peace and true harmony)
MAHAKALAAAAA bhairav stylee
and these fucks are attempting to put it off

itsall shady and these self important fucks are being used to misdirect general outrage
but im cynical
supposedly thisisthe awakening?
sorry i just cant align myself with those who see these as isolated issues

I do agree that everyone needs to be aware of what a massive fucking problem the global warming is and I do think they had best intentions in mind, but still.. this is smart people arranging shit like this, couldn't they have taken it a bit further?

They had the whole world watching- they had such an oppertunity to actually wake people up! (with more than Madonna screaming- save our planet.. blabla ) Al Gore could have taken the fucking train or whatever for example. They could have tried some really cool enviroment friendly things out. That would be far more interesting that seeing Jessicka braindead Biel dumping a bottle in the right bin!

And why didn't they attack the real bastards? The factories and such? Maybe Gore doesn't want to offend them- maybe that could hurt his pilitical career?

They say we need to do something- but they really mean Us- not them- has to do something.

Am I too undereductaed here?????

agree

These world "for causes" concerts are all complete bullshit. Personally I find it hard to believe that anyone is going to start caring about the environment because they saw a metallica concert.
It's just a way for the privledge to stamp their face on the it issue of the moment.

I don't necessarily disagree with the statements being made here, but I would be interested to hear if anyone here actually has any better ideas for raising awareness about this kind of thing.

That is true, it is importnant to raise awareness but I'm not sure this concert was the best thing.(it could have if they would have put more effort in it)
I personally have no idea how to make it better though..

I have run out of ideas and quite honestly, I have also run out of energy. Trying to explain Global Warming or at the very least the fucking Carbon Cycle to the public is nearly impossible. People do not like to be told that they need to live differently because what we are doing now is not efficient and in the long run we will not be able to continue our behavior. Better to start changing now, no? What is going on is not complicated, I mean, not complicated in the way that'd you'd need to be a genius, but you do need a fair amount of patience to understand the science behind it. In the States it is rare to find news sources that actually give accurate information or FULL information. Everything is given in bits and pieces.

Also, to be completely honest, I feel that the public won't make much of a difference. What will make a difference will be corporations and factories changing the way they do things. Their effect is on a much larger scale. Better than riding your bike to work.

This topic, like illegal immigration, gives me a headache. I honestly feel like shaking people and being like, "ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?!"
