| Former sex slave demands compensation in Japan rally A former Korean sex slave forced to work in a Japanese wartime military brothel demanded compensation and an apology at a rally outside the Diet building with dozens of supporters in Tokyo on Thursday.
"Please come before the victims and apologize," one of the organizers said through a microphone, addressing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, as about 90 protesters held large photos of the Japanese military's former sex slaves.
Historians say as many as 200,000 Asian women, mostly from Korea and China, worked in Japan's military-run brothels. Victims say they were forced to work at the brothels by the Japanese military and were held against their will.
Lee Yong-soo, 78, a former sex slave from South Korea, said she was taken to a brothel in Taiwan for Japan's kamikaze pilots when she was 14.
"I was taken to a soldier's room and I was kicked," she told the rally. "I am a victim who was forcibly taken."
Japan has rejected most compensation claims from women who worked in the brothels. A private fund created in 1995 offered limited support to former sex slaves, but that fund was shut down in March. (AP) |
