| Miscarriages of Justice - people wrongly imprisoned This isn't NEWS as such, but it's something that I only learned a few months ago and wondered if it was common knowledge.
In Scotland, certainly, and I think in the rest of the UK, if you are falsely imprisoned and then released, the courts having realised that there has been a miscarriage of justice, you will be compensated financially. Fair enough. They've taken away years of your life, damaged your relationships with family and friends, potentially, tarnished your reputation, made you into a public figure... robbed you of all personal freedom. This is all understandable to me.
What I wondered though is whether people were aware that you are charged - money is taken from your financial compensation - to pay for "bed and breakfast": your shelter and care while in prison and the fact that you've not had to incur living expenses...
I know this might seem like a weak thread topic, and I don't suppose that much debate will come from this, but did you know that? And isn't it appalling?

"Why did he have to replace it?" we wondered.
"Because he'd cut a hole in it." said Andrew, authoritively.
I ventured that I would just have gone at it between the cushions.
There's more than one way to fuck a couch. |
