While I realise that the majority of people don't care whether their chocolate is vegetarian or not, vegetarians, many Muslims, Jews and Hindus are all affected by Masterfoods' decision to use non-vegetarian whey.
Incidentally, for those of you who wouldn't consider eating veal, please note that this issue is also relevant to you - non-veggie rennet (the protein used in whey production e.g. for cheese) is sourced from calve's stomachs and is a by-product of the veal industry.
Products affected by this include: Mars, Milky Way, Bounty, Snickers, Galaxy, Twix and Maltesers.
Masterfoods have the following to say on the matter:
"From May 1, we are changing the source of the whey which is used in our chocolate confectionery and ice-cream products to include some animal-sourced whey. We are making this change to ensure the quality and availability of the supply of whey in the future.
The whey we will be using is the same kind of whey which is used in the majority of cheese,
which many vegetarians eat. Therefore all those vegetarians who are content to eat all varieties of cheese can continue to enjoy our products. "
I realise, again, that most folks don't care about what vegetarians do or don't eat; however, for a major food production company to misrepresent a significant demographic in this way is completely unacceptable. Vegetarians don't eat non-vegetarian foods, otherwise it wouldn't be non-vegetarian would it?
If any of you would like to point out to Masterfoods that just cos a few misguided people eat non-veggie whey and still claim to be vegetarian, that doesn't make non-veggie whey "vegetarian" - please email them to say so!
