I didnt know whether to post this in the book section or here...
To tell you the truth I have never paid that much attention to politics. I try and listen/watch the news when I can, but overall, I'm pretty clueless.
I would realy like to now what sort of books I should set about reading...I really want to understand the conflict in the middle east and the politics of my own country (UK) better. I really do not know the first thing.
If anyone has any books that they would reccomend, I'm all ears...Obviously I know that I need to get involved into it and form my own opinions that way, but I really would like some back up help!
well it depends what kind of politics you are interested in i suppose
but on the middle east i found writers like Fred Halliday, Edward Said and to a lesser extent Noam Chomsky as he tends to be a bit more controversial, to be quite useful. there is also a book by a journalist, called dining with terrorists by phil rees which i loved as it eschewed the normal good guy/bad guy dichotomy that a lot of approaches take. Also the journalism of Robert Fisk is very good on this subject.
maybe look at someone like monbiot on the politics of the uk?

Fred Halliday is interesting. I found this article by him:
