| For us in Northern California it is wonderful to have dry and sunny weather again. The rain came late this year, possibly due to global climate variations. We suffered many power outages and mudslides. These are things that don't get in the "bad news", nor are remembered once the sun comes out again. Our neighborhood road is washed out. We are responsible as neighbors to repair the road. UPS, the utility companies, many delivery services cannot get up our road now. We have no garbage service. This may sound like tough conditions, but it appears as though the 40 households that live here are coming together with a community spirit and vitality to overcome the crisis. Even the county may come to our aid and provide some funds to help us now, although legally we are responsible for our private road. I can get out the back way. In 1982 people had to backpack in and out to go to work because of mudslides that closed the canyon.
I call the weather conditions "good news" because there is hope. Maybe next year we will have a road again. I would not trade this place, even with the inconveniences. Life without the inconvenience is a life without opportunity. Good news is always about the opporunity to overcome great odds.
