| | | Montana Meth Project, Anti Drug Ads That Work http://www.montanameth.org/
Please go visit this site. This campain is amazing. Especially view the commercials (they load very quickly), they are brilliant (the first one (it's titled 'girlfriend' or 'boyfriend') the ad is spot on and scary. The first time I saw it on TV here I was shocked, and happy that someone had the balls to say it).
Also, they sponsered an art contest state wide where high school students would create anti-meth art. Local businesses donated the sides of their buildings, art cars were created, hell they even painted (humanely of course) livestock. The art is really good, I wish a well known gallery would make a show for them. I think the link on the site is called 'Paint it'.
I used to me a hardcore meth addict years ago, and when I first saw the ads on TV and the billboards on the highways here, I said holy shit. And that reaction made me say, bravo. Actually it was one of the factors that made up my mind to move to Montana.
When I was on meth I was living in Arizona, a state with one of the worst meth problems in the country (not to mention the worst rate of ID theft and auto theft because of meth). These ads were privatly funded initially and were offered for free to the state of AZ if they agreed not to censcor them in any way. They refused, citing they would offend too many people. Would you be more offended by a commercial with good intentions, or being a victim of meth related crime? |

| | | I'm glad for this. Quite honestly I'm frustrated with the anti-drug commercials I see because they always target marijuana. I live in Kansas and Missouri, both of which have rediculous meth problems and Missouri cities also have crack issues. I feel the country is missing the point when they point at weed, when I see lives messed up almost daily due to meth and crack.
It makes me almost believe all the conspiracy theories involving the government's hand in the production and distribution of both. Note how meth use in rural areas increased heavily exactly when subsidies to family farms were cut and thousands (if not millions) of families were run to poverty across the country.
kudos to Montana for doing this. |

kudos to Montana for doing this. | Thank you! So many people miss the mark when it come to weed, they call it the 'gateway drug'. Bullshit, the real gateway drugs are cigarettes and parent's liquor cabinets. Or at least it was for me and my friends in the 19th century.
I think what makes this campaign so good is that the people who created it worked with teens who had delt with the horrors of meth. It's their stories, not something copywriters pulled out of their ass.
If you want to make a difference in your area (and I know it's really bad there from previous experiences, Kansas City area?), then forward the project's links to your local politicians. It was privately funded by a very rich, very socially aware man. He has said he will provide the ads FREE to any community who wants them, provided they agree not to censor them in any way. That's the only thing he asks (shame on Phoenix!). So they can get a very effective, very well done anti drug campaign for free if they have the balls to take criticism in order to save not only lives, but their community. |

The cops don't surprise me, experience. But mostly because of the one good cop who helped set me straight. In short a very overwhelmed detective who had been dealing with my stolen car had enough and for an hour ripped me a new one. He told me that even some of his buddies were hooked on meth and that basically if I didn't stop they would be pulling me out of a dumpster. Then he dropped my case, as a lesson. It worked. Meth affects all levels and aspects of society, it's not just a trailer park problem. I used to do it with soccer moms who lived in million dollar houses. |

Yeah, KC. And if anything it's probably gotten worse these last years.
If I choose to remain there I'll definately try to get active on this in some way, but the politics here as corrupt as they are, I'm not going to have my hopes up.
The root cause here, I believe, is the corrupt police department and an ignorant governor whose intelligence rivals Bush's. |

Common everyone knows that drugs come freely into United States by the hundreds of tons everyday... It is unbelievable the amount of drugs you can freely find in every city, town in United States of America 24/7.. People come from all over the world and are amazed at the amounts of drugs in United States and are also amazed at the Billions and Billions and Billions of U.S. tax payer’s money the U.S. wastes trying to stop the drugs from coming to United States.
And this is the funny part… The news media, President Bush and just about any other fools all congratulate themselves when they catch ONE boat loaded with drugs. Bush goes on TV bragging about he just stop the drugs from coming to United States while the people in the know are tripping. |

Ohmigosh all those commercials are misleading because young people do not go to Meth as the first drug... they are usually under the influence of other drugs and/or alcohol and someone just happens to slip in some meth...
The commercials were good but not accurate..
And the commercials are misleading because non show black or Hispanics using meth…
All you have to do is just take a trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and you will see all sorts of people on meth from the police all the way down to the homeless people. It’s crazy. |

But I appreciate your persistent attempts to show off your racist tendencies. (I've never noticed you complain about the lack of ethnic minorities in other programs though to be fair, I skim most of your posts) |

All you have to do is just take a trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and you will see all sorts of people on meth from the police all the way down to the homeless people. It’s crazy. | Yes, other drugs usually do come first, but they do not have such a destructive impact as meth. But on the other hand, there are a lot of kids (especially in rural areas) where meth is their first drug, because it's easy to get or their parents/family members are on it. We've got a big second generation tweeker problem here.
There is a reason there are no minorities in the commercials, it's because they were created initially for the state of Montana. There are very few minorities here (hell, this is one of the largest states in land mass, but the state's entire population is less than a million people, it's very rural here). It's not that minorities aren't welcome (in fact it's a very outsider friendly state), it's just that they haven't moved here in numbers. It's not racism, it's demographics. Plus, from my experience, meth is a very white drug.
Oh and right now I'm watching the commercial where the girl is sold by her loving boyfriend into prostitution for a bag of meth. It happens all the time. |
