I've met a lot of swedish and dutch people and they all ha way less general knowledge and hardly any of them spoke three languages....which most Belgians do.

besides. what does a list like that say any way. sure there's stupid people in the US, but it's also a fact that more than half of the living Noble Prize winners teach at American universities so I'm guessing there's some smart people in the US as well...I actually met quite a few.

I think it's probably the other way around. I haven't read the article and I'm not going to just now, but it's pretty obvious on a small scale here in the US that the rich kids have the benefit of a better education, educated parents who do more things right when the kids are in the womb (extensive prenatal care & advice, nutrition), etc.

What kind of idiot goes around compiling lists like this anyway? I can't believe that there are actually people in the world who throw money at this kind of pointless research.

I'd seen a stat that IQ is inversely disproportionate to income (although not exactly), but the one posted may either confirm or deny it, given that I suck at maths.

Re: Sarah KidA's comment, that's fairly meaningless. Bear in mind the above is an AVERAGE score for the nation. You might find a country where there is a broad spread of IQ scores (e.g. 80-120) which has the same average as a country where everyone is basically the same (say 95-105)..

General knowledge in particular has precisely nothing to do with IQ. IQ is meant to measure one's capacity for learning and understanding, not facts that one has accumulated throughout one's life. That's why it doesn't change much over time.

Exactly. The people who conduct this kind of research are nowhere near as smart as they think. Ask the average man in the street and he'll tell you it's way better to go inside and be dry than do either of those things.

I don't think they're smart. Why would I? There's a story by Borges about a map made 1:1, referring by parody to our obsessive measuring and simulation of our own reality. There doesn't seem to be a great deal our culture is good at beyond measuring its own successes and failures. When we're gone, our society will effectively still exist in information form.

I'm shit at these things, I think it was an anecdotal thing. I don't think it was exact or anything, but it certainly implied that a high IQ was at least unnecessary for financial success in broad terms.

IQ tests, in my opinion, are just ways to make people feel less than what they are. Many academics have argued that it is a form of scienitific racism, since many people who do poor on the tests tend to be from nations that have colored people; and the IQ tests fail to take into account that some of the people that are taking the test have no use for the knowledge that they are being asked to know. For example, why would a black female from Congo need to know an IQ-like test question:

A mother is 21 years older than her child. In exactly 6 years from now, the mother will be exactly 5 times as old as the child.

Where's the father?

Why would you expect a someone to know this or to know how to do this, when in their life they have no use for it. It's like throwing a white urbanite that was born and raised in NYC in the middle of a rain forest and asking them to find their way out.
