| | | from yahoo BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S.-backed Iraqi television station Al Hurra said Saddam Hussein had been executed by hanging shortly before 6 a.m. (0300 GMT) on Saturday.
The former Iraqi president ousted in April 2003 by a U.S.- led invasion was convicted in November of crimes against humanity over the killings of 148 Shi'ite villagers from Dujail after a failed assassination bid in 1982.
An appeals court upheld the death penalty on Tuesday. Iraq's government has kept details of its plans to conduct the execution completely secret amid concerns it could spark a violent backlash from his former supporters.

| | | from Associated Press BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Some Arab media, including Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya and the U.S.-financed Al-Hurrah, reported about an hour before daylight Saturday (about 10 p.m. EST Friday) that Saddam had been executed. There was no confirmation from the Iraqi government.
A U.S. judge on Friday refused to stop Saddam's execution, rejecting a last-minute court challenge.
U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said U.S. courts do not have jurisdiction to interfere in another country's judicial process. The ruling can be appealed, but it was issued within an hour of the time Iraqi officials said they expected the execution to be carried out.
Saddam and others were convicted of murder in the killings of 148 Shiite Muslims from an Iraqi town where assassins tried to kill Saddam in 1982.
Also to be hanged were Saddam's half-brother Barzan Ibrahim and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court, the adviser said. |

| | | I think it's pretty vile that media like cnn are gonna show the execution and stuff, or at least the more respectable images, but come on..it's over with and done for. Move the fuck on, and just let it be.
He was a bad man, he got what he deserved, but to video this shit is pretty fucking lame too. |

He was a bad man, he got what he deserved, but to video this shit is pretty fucking lame too. | it's so incredibly overwhelming to iraquis the fact that saddam hussein has been executed, it's been reported that many people there didn't believe his hanging would ever take place. the release of images are, supposedly, to prove he is actually dead.
they did the same thing with his sons, those were some graphic pictures that had to be shown nonetheless. |

| | | Yeah, I hear what you're getting at.
But sensationalism and tragedy always sells. This reminds me of that Tool song..

| | | I want to see the video because I want to see if it was really him that was hanged, I hope they put the hood on when he was on the gallows so we could all see that it was really him.
Good ridance. He got off easy. If it were my decision, I would have let his surviving victims and the families of the dead stone him to death. Considering the torture and horror he inflicted, I hope that rope dug deep and he died terrified. |

it would be like if a bigger/badder country came to america and arrested/executed bush because they "don't think he's a good leader."
iraq has never posed a threat to us, but 50% of americans still think saddam had something to do with the world trade center's demise.
americans have been propagandized, and programmed. end of story.
truth is, we had no fucking right to do a goddamn thing to that man or his country. but hey, we're america! we don't have to take shit from anybody.
on a side note, im not even neccessarily convinced he's actually been killed. |

I love this cliche of blaming america for all the problems in the world. |

Saddam is responsible for slayings of his people. Whos responsible when a citizen is put to death by our govt, apparently no one. Wasn't GWB known for use of the death pentalty while governor? Its just ironic.
on the bright side, ive forgotten about the brutal mistakenhood of 911 mission accompli |

I don't agree with the war in Iraq, but that doesn't mean I think that Sadaam was falsly accussed. His reign of terror has been well documented. The one that sticks in my head is having women immersed in acid in front of their children. And vice-versa. I didn't hear of this through propoganda, this was from a longtime friend who served in the first Gulf War.
I don't belive Hussein had anything to do with 9/11, but he was still a monster. I hope it was a slow, painfull hanging. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
