How about maybe focusing that if she had a past and has dealt with or is in the process of overcoming whatever issues, maybe providing support and putting a positive spin on things.

Dudette, she's a Miss America contestant, it's a little late to be worrying about her dignity. The whole contest is about assessing whether a person conforms to these vapid and unfathomable criteria. I mean, sure, it's a big contest and all that, but anyone who seriously believes that the criteria for the contest have any grounding in a person's actual worth is a fool.
Wouldn't it be a bit weird in a contest that focuses so heavily on how conventionally perfect someone looks for the most part to suddenly start rewarding people for having overcome adversity and such?
