12 year-old Chris Stewart will be spending Christmas at home this year, now that doctors have successfully re-attached his head.
Whilst racing a Mini-Cooper in an organized event, Stewart crashed at 40mph. During the wreck, his skull was separated from his spine -- an internal decapitation. His tongue was also detached at the root, which has made speaking and eating difficult during his 2 month recovery. Doctors trying to save the boy's life had apparently never seen such an injury, because those who suffer it always die immediately.
Both Stewart's parents, who were at the event when at the accident occurred, and doctors have been overwhelmed by the boy's progress."They told us it would be a year before he could walk but he was already walking after three weeks. The doctor was in tears when he saw him," said John Stewart, Chris' father.
Thankfully, a full recovery is expected -- although I suspect that the Stewart family's racing days are over. |
