So today is the wolrd aids day- here are some scary facts:

Two young people become infected with HIV every hour in the U.S.
50% of all new infections occur in young people between the ages of 15-24. Most of them don't know they carry the virus.
15 million children have been orphaned by AIDS -- that is the equivalent to every American child under the age of 5.
AIDS kills one child every minute.


I wish this horror would be over, and cancer, but I feel a cure will be available someday.

I never knew that.. and it's shocking. I don't know what else to say.

Well there's no cure, but there are ARV drugs ..mostly available in the west ..that control the disease and let people live mostly normal lives.

I remember when Miss Universe was held here in Panama, I distinctivly remember Miss Namibia, she looked just like Naomi Campbell. I remember she said she came from a village, where she caught fish with her hands, and she never dreamt she would be on an internartional stage, I thought it was so cute and hearfelt. I really wanted her to win.

let me tell you about namibia.
they have electricity and sattelite tv and roads and are probably richer than panama. she probably said she caught fish with her hands as a ploy to win miss world. maybe it's something she did as a child and i'm sure people live like that but really, namibia has cities and infrastructure and running water and suburbs. etc. my brother was born in namibia. in a HOSPITAL. in 1979. my parents lived in a HOUSE and drove a CAR. etc.
africa is full of big cities etc.
sure it is highly underdeveloped in places and extremely poor, but in my job i sell to customers in malawi, botswana, swaziland, lesotho, namibia, botswana, ghana, nigeria, etc. they all have telephones and fax machines and email and the ability to send currency and bank internationally and comply with customs regulations and speak english and wear shoes and not live in huts.
