Abortion and Latin America

In late October the Nicaraguan Congress voted to ban all abortions. In Brazil - where the abortion rate is higher than the U.S. - a growing movement is developing to make abortion legal and to help women suffering from the complications of illegal procedures.

Is there something people can do about contraception in helping this case? Does Catholisism have an effect on contraception usage? Its just shocking on how many women have to resort to abortion for unwanted pregnancy. It isnt the easiest way to prevent it.
