Non-prescription cure for acid reflux?

My fiance' has suffered from acid reflux for quite a while. He doesn't have heartburn per se, but he has thrown up from it, feels the acid burning in his chest at times. It doesn't help that he smokes, though he's aiming to quit & has cut back considerably.
Well, its just been something he's lived with. Today I overheard an acquaintence that her Uncle had acid reflux before they knew what it was called, and developed throat cancer from it. Makes sense, but I didn't think of it to that extreme until she mentioned that. The problem is he doesn't have insurance and we don't have the money to take him to a doctor to get the prescription medication used to treat acid reflux disease. {He doesn't just get this after he eats spicy food...It's more at random, and mostly at night or when he wakes up in the morning.}
Are there any nurses, doctors, or any other sufferers out there who have any non-prescription medications/tips/home remedies?
This is what I was thinking personally:
[x] Drinking milk, things that coat the throat {the only milk he consumes is in his cereal}
[x] Having him take antacids before he goes to bed nightly to prevent the acid before it starts {He usually only does this when he wakes up with the acid reflux problems}- I just don't know if there are any cautions for taking antacids DAILY w/out a doctor advising him.
Any input would be appreciated.

i have bad bad BAD reflux and i have a system. if im gonna drink coffee, i pop 20 mg pepcid with my coffee (only drink it on my work days) and then about an hour before bed i take 20 mg pepcid (just get the walgreens brand of famotidine) and 1000 mg tums

i dont eat for three hours before bed. i avoid greasy foods, and i dont smoke or drink. actually in the past couple years ive had about a total of ten beers, and some glasses of wine so thats not entirely true, but its so rare that its not that big of a deal... and i take tums with or just after i drink.

also ive just started to drink lots of WATER and this helps a great deal. im lactose intolerant so milk doesnt help me

in hospital, if we use famotidine, we always give 20 mg twice a day. at 0900 and 1700
