diet coke though, lots of aspartame & aspartame is bad! i dont think it digests properly &yeh can cause problems. i posted a link to a side before, with loads of side effects and what it does.

i recently read a study that said a person needs to drink an INSANE amount of diet soda's in order for the aspartame to cause brain damage.

The aspartame contains a chemical called phenylalanine. If you suffer from a genetic disorder called phenylketonuria, you lack the enzyme that breaks down phenylalanine and must avoid all foods with it, because it would build up in your brain and cause eventual retardation. However, if you do not have phenylketonuria, you should be fine. I suppose I could see that if you drank massive amounts of it, you might consume more than the amount of enzyme you have in your body could break down and if you did this constantly you might have some build up and cause brain damage. But this would be massive, massive amounts. I've never heard of brain damage from normal quantities of diet coke. You're more likely to get a sick stomach from the aspartame than brain damage. Also, when these studies are done with mice, they're not always relevant to humans. These are little 1 ounce creatures with pea sized brains (or smaller) who are being fed their body weight in aspartame consistently. Obviously aspartame would build up in their systems much faster than in a 120 lb human with a 5 lb brain who consumed very tiny amounts of aspartame daily.

Possibly a stupid question, but how would you know if you had this particular genetic dissorder? Is it a more obvious one that is diagnosed at bith and this is just a side effect or could you have it and not know?

it is diagnosed at birth. if not treated within the first few weeks it can cause retardation of the brain etc.

as for the adverse effects of aspartame, most likely you have to digest a ridiculous ammount of diet soda to experience those. my guess would be several gallons everyday for a long period of time.
