"Have I locked the door?" and other obsessions.

Who else is an anxious prick like me? I could leave work in a hurry (infact, I have) just to run back home and check if I have locked the door/switched the cooker off and stuff like that. It drives me mad because 99% of the times I HAVE locked the door etc, but I just can't convince myself that there's nothing to stress about. Am I alone here? I read on a magazine that it could be the symptom of some neurological disease, but most people keep telling me that it's just a bit of anxiety and it'll pass when I grow up and become more self confident. I hate it though, it ruins my days.

I get that problem too. I even have it set to lock when I close the door, but then I freak out over whether I closed the door when I go out. Normally I just have to trust myself and go on without going back to check, and it always turns out that I closed it.

When I first moved into my place, I used to sometimes come in and leave the keys in the lock of the front door. One of my neighbours rung my doorbell to tell me one time. I always manage to bring them inside with me now, but end up having to get out of bed at night to check I haven't left them in the door.

It could be a symptom of OCD, but unless you've got other obsessive routines and anxieties, chances are it's just normal. I wouldn't freak out about those things I mentioned if I hadn't gotten it wrong at least once. Screwing up now and then is just human, and it's easy to start second-guessing yourself when you get it wrong once. But also remember that when you get something wrong, it makes you more likely to remember get it right in future. The trouble is, you're just not conscious of the fact that you remember because you do these things on auto-pilot.

I'm like that too. I'll lock the door and KNOW i did lock it but I always set off and then have to go back and check! Same with my hair straightners. I know i've turned them off but once i leave the house I always have to call home and get my mum to check i switched them off. Aaaand most nights I'll be laid in bed and i have to get up and check all the gas is off!

It's just those three things though, the dorr, hair straightners and gas!
