Question Depression/anxiety comorbidity help

I think mainly that I have depression.
But I'm also intensely anxious and on edge.

I know that the two often occur together anyway. But I don't want to be helped mainly for anxiety because I don't want the only feeling that I still have to go away, if that makes sense. But I feel it needs to be alleviated before I can be happier.

My question is, has anyone ever been succesfully treated for this kind of problem (with medication or therapy)? I don't have panic attacks - I have a family member who has "anxiety" and for example I'm far far more level headed and calm than she is. Its just... a constant gnawing feeling that builds up rather than attacks. Also being overly sensitive to other people's feelings.

I know all the text book stuff about this, but the reason I ask here is I want a more personal qualitative account of other people's experiences. At the moment I don't see the point in doing anything because I don't know what would work, if you get me.

If they go together so much, why is there a problem with them being treated together? You might find that the anxiety is a cause of your depression, or the other way around.

I myself am having severe problems with both right now
If anyone finds the answer, let me know

But then, how to go about it?

I mean, you turn up at your preciously booked appointment, and its like "whats the problem", so you say "I'm worried" or "I'm depressed" or what?
It may be obvious I don't trust GPs.
If you say "I have both, I don't really know which is causing the other" what do they do? I'm just wondering about other people's experiences.

There are medications that treat both in one...like paxil. It didn't really help me too much, but I was on a low dose, and it's different for everyone.
