I think you should call his office (assuming he has a secretary) with your legitimate concerns and politely ask that they cancel your appointment, with no charge.

I'm pretty sure they won't charge you at all, given the circumstances. Do as Black Mambo said.

Mind you, I read the profile of him and he does seem to express a lot of regret over it. But still.
