| The MMR only protects against mumps in 9 out of 10 cases. So there are still lots of people vulnerable even if everyone HAS had the MMR. Its a big problem in England at the moment. My best friend had it this time last year. I must confess, it looked hilarious, although she was in a lot of pain and was very miserable. I had single shots as a child and a Measles and Rubella booster at 9, so I was a bit screwed- I couldn't have an MMR booster though because I'd just been on a two week dose of incredibly high dose steroids which depress your immune system for three months afterwards and you can't have any live vaccines. So I just had to make sure I was very careful with my handwashing. And I did have the booster last summer.
I never understand why people avoid the tiny pain of infections and suffer horribly as a consequence....I mean its a bit of a no-brainer. Sting of an injection or face swells up (and if you are a boy your balls swell right up- and you can potentially become infertile), you vomit with the pain and look hilarious for about three weeks. |
