fear of train tracks, buses/trams, high buildings...

So I read once (I think it was on here) that if you have a fear of the above mentioned things (I do) that it's actually subconsciously a fear that you might jump in front of the train/bus/tram, jump off the high building you're on.....

I'm just wondering whether anyone has any more info on this cos I find it interesting.

thanks

I was discussing this with my friends a while back. Everyone is secretly scared of this because they are secretly scared that they are capable of doing that to themselves. I used to have nightmares as a 3/4 year old about falling onto the Paris Metro tracks. Even now I touch the wall of the underground as the train is coming into the station- and I take the underground EVERY day!

ooh. yea, I have that too. when we're driving fast sometimes I'm like "wow. I would really like to open this door now". and also when I'm driving and a truck is coming rom the other direction and I sometimes feel the urge to turn my wheel and crash into it.

but the train tracks thing and fear of trams is seriously bad with me. I'm really scared and freak out when I'm close to them.

Sometimes when I'm walking alongside the main highway, I marvel at how quick and easy it would be to throw yourself in front of a big truck. You're a split second away from a gruesome death the whole time you walk down the pavement. Not that I really want to do it or anything! Or one of them could go off course, mount the pavement, and squish you before you knew what hit you.
Jumping in front of trains would take some careful planning around where I am, we have hardly any of them. But I live close enough to the tracks that I could hear the noise of the barrier coming down and, with a lot of effort, run to the tracks just in time to go splat. Cool.

I don't so much get the compulsion to do it, but I do wonder about it a lot. Again, it's just so easy to do. Luckily I compulsively lock all car doors I am near, for whatever reason. Just a habit.

That's really weird, i walk along the interstate almost every day and i've honestly never even considered that. Not saying you're weird, i find it strange because usually if there's something morbid in a situation i'll have thought about it

With trains and high buildings and stuff (such as elevator doors closing on you) i stress about other people coming to grief. My friends know to stand well back from the yellow line at the train station or else i'll physically pull them back. They're adults, they know how to keep their balance and be sensible (for the most part) but i still feel compelled to watch them like a hawk in those instances.

But the big fuck-off trucks hurtling by metres from you! Teh 18-wheelers! You don't need to be Pink to see the possibilities.

yep, I do that too. and when we're at a high building or sth people who know me will sometimes annoy me by standing too close to the edge and go "ooh ooh. look I'm gonna fall". it's really not funny.

and when we're crossing the street I tend to take the person I'm with (even my mom!) by the arm cos I'm afraid they'll cross when it's not safe.

They sound kind of like logical fears to me...like fears of death, which is a sensible thing to be afraid of. Unlike fear of feathers (like my mum has) or computer keys or something else that's practically harmless.

I always assumed that everyone thought about jumping off tall buildings or running in front of cars when they saw them...I think people in general have quite morbid minds naturally, unless they repress it. But I don't have any objective sciency stuff that I imagine you're looking for, only my own opinion based on entirely spurious thoughts.

i'm more scared of being pushed, espcially when it comes to subways because things like that do happen every now and then (in toronto at least).
as spoiled said, stand behind the yellow line!

When my brother and I were younger I had this crazy fear that something bad would happen to him. I remember we were at some amusement park and we were waiting on the train and I was just so afraid that he would fall off and get hit. Another one was at my grandmother's house, she had this huge ditch across from her and me and my little would play near there and once again I would get so creeped out that he would fall in. I'm kinda over that now that I'm older but I do have real bad fear about trains and trucks. I think the truck fear is do to watching pet semetary lol.
