| it varies a lot for everyone. some women seem to get horrendous symptoms, some are fine. there's a lot of depo provera horror story websites out there, i would try to avoid them as they're not at all representative
the most common things people find with depo is weight gain (approx half a stone and avoidable as it is caused by an increased appetite and thus eating more than usual) and that their periods end. it may take up to 3 shots before the periods end, but they're normally lighter and shorter after the first one
there's one more sinister side effect though, it might cause reduced bone density and then osteoporosis later on. if you smoke or drink heavily you're already at larger risk of osteoporosis, so you should cut down (or with smoking, quit). also make sure you get more than the recommended amount of calcium and vitamin d and keep your weight healthy. exercise strengthens bones too
i've been on depo for about 18 months, mainly as treatment for endometriosis rather than for contraception. i haven't had any problems with it |
