loreal and herbal essences do a line of temporary foam hair dyes that don't contain ammonia and only last a week or so. i used to use the red ones a lot. the black might stain if you're naturally blonde though.

and yeah, youve got to wait until the henna grows out before you can risk putting another dye on top

Not all henna contains metallic salts. Only the bad ones You should look for Body art quality (BAQ) henna. It's probably the best quality there is and it won't turn your hair green or something
BUT henna is a permanent hair dye...but if you don't have any problems with that, henna is a good choice to make you hair darker.
Remember, henna dyes your hair red, so if you want a brown/black colour you should add some BAQ indigo to your henna mix.

You can also use some herbs to darken your hair. Like rosemary, thyme and common sage. But you have to use them frequently for al long time before you see the (subtile) difference.

And yes, I've tried all this myself!

L'oreal Color Pulse (the mousse thing)

for the natural ways to make hair darker:

- Cherry Bark and Black Tea Hair Color recipe

Prepare a strong tea from black tea leaves and cherry bark. Use as a rinse after shampooing, finishing with a water rinse.

- Coffee Rinse recipe

For brunettes and redheads.

8 cups warm brewed coffee

After shampooing rinse hair with coffee. Do not rinse it out. Your hair will be rich and shiny.

- Sage Rinse recipe

For dark hair.

2 cups malt or red wine vinegar
2 cups water
1/4 cup sage

Combine ingredients in a glass or enamel pan and boil for 15 minutes. Strain, cool, and store in a tightly capped bottle.

After shampooing, pour 1/2 cup over hair, then rinse.
