Good question. I'd like to know that too, because when it gets to the pus/scab stage it's a bitch to cover and anything you put on it makes it look like you've actually PUT something on it to cover it up. If it's really that bad, I think the only option is to get one of those circular Band Aid plaster things, whack it over the zit and just tell people someone accidentally poked you in the face with a lit cigarette, then wait for the worst of the flaking to go and then look at using concealer.

I just TOTALLY thought of something as I typed that. Have you ever seen those "Compeed" cold sore patches?

Product - COMPEED® TOTAL CARE™ Invisible Cold Sore Patch

You can put them over cold sores, as they're transparent they cover the skin surface and you can effectively apply concealer and make up on top of it.

i think with a decent combination of vaseline, visine, moisturizer, and whatever you use to cover up the thing that needs covering, you can get by for a minute

and hoping like fuck that you had a day or 2 off to stay home

i used to work with some bitch that covered her acne with a slap of foundation on each cheek. not blended in. at all. and in the wrong shade. because she was asian and had asian skin tone and using foundation with pink undertones.

what champers said sounds good. you should do that. i don't have spots or zits that need covering up (thank god because when i first was preggers i started breaking out on my face and chest and BACK. so unfortunate. but it's all cleared up now).

but i do have uneven skin tone and freckles and some skin damage so i've found that the best way to create an even color and conceal the flaws is to do a few of the champers steps. but not all of them because i get lazy. i do the washing of the face with a mild exfoliating cleanser. then i put a thin layer of lotion (eucerin is my fave because it's thick so i don't need much and absorbs well into any dry flaky areas). then i do hair or watch tv or eat breakfast or whatever i can do while i'm waiting for the lotion to absorb. then i dust on a layer of mineral foundation and then work more in where it looks like it needs more concealment. then proceed with rest of makeup.

i've found that the moisturizing step creates a better surface for foundation than to not use any at all. and also creates what my bff and i call the dewy face. which looks way better than some dry old face and covers better anyway.
