hair lightening with honey

I read about this on that famous long hair website.
pretty interesting, apparently honey produces peroxide when in contact with water.
so you can mix an amount of honey with 4 times the amount of water and then put it on your wet hair for an hour and it lightens it a bit without any damage.

I have boring ass dark blonde hair. I used to be much blonder, but got darker with puberty... I don't like my hair color all that much, but don't want to start dyeing again cos it really messed up my hair in the past. My hair does get a lot lighter in the summer, but there's hardly any sun over here.
So I tried this honey thing and it did actually lighten my hair noticeably.
I really like it and my hair is soft and shiny. I'm gonna do a couple of treatments and hopefully will achieve a nice blonde color.

anyone else done this?

It's cool it worked for you, but I tried this once along with the lemon juice thing, and sadly I'll never be one of those naturally dark blonde girls that can lighten their hair this way with home remedies and look sunkissed and as blonde as I like to be.
I'm afraid it has to be bleach highlights for me in the salon all the way!But good on you, you're obviously born one of the lucky ones!

SaraKidA can you describe exactly the process you used? I want to lighten but refuse to put chems in my hair anymore (after years of abuse and damage).

aww, sorry it doesn't work on your hair you guys. that sucks.
I never did the lemon juice thing. It's so old school though, I love it, but I hear it really dries out your hair and can make it orange!
I think the reason the honey works for me is because my hair takes color very easily. it's quite dry naturally and therefore probably porous, so that makes changing the color easier. and it also changes color easily in the sun.

any way, this is how honey lightening goes:
you need:
- distilled water (I actually used tap water this time and it still worked, but you best use the distilled water because tap water has minerals and stuff that interferes with the peroxide production from the honey)
- honey: the best is jarrah honey but only available in australia. you best use manuka or a honeydew honey. these are dark honeys. I used honeydew 100%raw honey.
- you can also add coconut oil, or cinnamon or cardamom as a "peroxide booster". I didn't do this yet though.

You mix the honey with the water. You need to calculate by weight and you need 4times more water. When you have 10grams of honey, you need 40 grams of water etc... I did 20 grams of honey and 80 grams of water (I have hair almost to my bra strap).

then you let the mixture stand for like an hour to produce peroxide. Then you wet your hair very well. The hair needs to be very wet for this treatment. Then you put the honeymix on there. I used a spray bottle and just dunked my ends in the bowl with leftover mix. You're better of using one of those dye applicator bottles though, or a tint brush like they use at the hairdresser. I don't have any of that, but I think next time i'll put the mix in a medium sized bowl and just put my head in there. then all my hair will be covered.

THEN you wring your hair out a little because it'll be a bit too wet, but it still needs to be dripping wet. so then you put up your hair with a clip or something and wrap saran wrap on your head. it looks retarded, but it helps keep your hair wet during the treatment, which is very important. don't use a towel on your head! just put a a shower cap over it. you will look like a douche and honeywater will be dripping all over the place (use a towel on your shoulders).
leave it on for an hour. Shampoo and condition as usual. And that's it.
