oh no herbal essences?!

cause i use that and really like it, but i switch it up all the time. like every other wash cause i really like lots of diff shampoos

does anyone have links to sciencey things on this subject?

I don't have links to sciency things because I've never looked into it properly, but I've found it hard to see anything except hear say on messageboards. There was this site, which aspires to an authoritiative voice, but mostly seems to do so through having the word 'brains' in its address:

are silicones bad for your hair?

soon followed by this:

silicones can strengthen damaged hair

So I'd say that site is hedging its bets pretty securely.

But on the Herbal Essences subject, I could never use it because every time I see it I see 'Hurtful Essences'. Surprising what an effect photoshopping a logo can have. I'm sure a lot of other things I use have been tested on animals or are even owned by Proctor and Gamble (since almost everything is owned by them or Unilever), so it's pretty stupid of me really.

Herbal Essences was voted the best shampoo in Cosmopolitan this year so it can't be that bad, I use it sometimes, I never stick to one shampoo, just what's on offer.

Here they sell pure silicon for you to use on your hair, specially ends, preventing them from breaking
I think one important thing is that we're not supposed to use hair conditioner anywhere close to the roots

People voted for Hitler so he can't be that bad. Not a perfect analogy because in politics it tends to matter to some extent what your moral standpoint is, whereas in cosmetics having a conscience is optional, however, it is the classic illustration of the problem of entrusting the public with decision making. But I commend your decision to buy what's on offer - fuck the cult of beauty that demands brand loyalty, take full advantage of competitive capitalism.

I think probably anything to do with beauty is a big con, except radical treatments like botox and face lifts, there's probably not much you can really do to change your genes. The whole cosmetics industry is built on people's fears of turning into their mothers - someone really ought to write a book on it, because Naomi Wolf really missed out the rather Freudian aspect of the beauty myth. Why do I even start threads in the beauty forum when I inevitably end up sabotaging them? Someone kick me out
