Curling hair (with rollers preferably)

So I like curling my hair (lightly!) with a curling iron. I use a big one so I get loose curls, actually more waves.

But the iron is kinda damaging to my hair I guess cos it's with heat so I was thinking I should start using rollers or sth.
Except I don't know what kinds there are and what kind I should get and whether I would get a nice effect?

+ does anyone have experience with curling your hair with rags?

thanks

these two things worked for me:

use velcro rollers. they come in a package with all different sizes and they are great on all all hair types. if you have a lot of time, put them in your hair when its partially dry and sleep in them, otherwise you can put them in your damp hair and use a blowdryer to finish dying them.

i loved velcro rollers when i had long hair. they give the best looking waves.

OR

if you have medium to long hair, put your hair in a tight ponytail, twist into a bun (with wet or dry hair, wet is best) and then sleep with it like that. when you wake up just take it down and run your fingers through it.

also use a volumizing or curl enhancing mousse when your hair is wet before applying rollers/bun.

thanks for the reply.
I did try velcro rollers once but they wouldn't stay in my hair? I was a lot younger though so maybe I should try them again.... I'm better at handling my hair now.
But how do you sleep in them?. I really don't think I'd be able to do that?

And the bun thing sounds good and easy, but my hair dries really slow (I have thick hair and a lot of it). I'm pretty sure my hair would be dry by morning... Do you think I could then use the blowdryer on it a bit in the morning (while it's still in a bun)?

my daughter has long, curly hair. i use strips of material, cut up from t- shirts, to tame her curls. it works great and it doesn't damage the hair. it saves so much time and she doesn't go to school with her hair wet.

cut strips about 2 inches wide 12 inches long, preferably from a material that doesn't cause lint. i use a leave in conditioner on my girl's hair before i wrap. take your damp hair from the ends and roll them up as high as you can. tie the two ends together tight. sleep, wake up, and take them out. style as you do.

you'll figure out how they work for you best.

* i use about 8 strips for her hair.

i might try rags, my hair curls on one side more than the other and it bugs the shit out of me

curly hair product i like is toni and guy - anything in pink packaging (the normal stuff is red i think?) has good hold and doesnt gunk you up - it actually looks better slept on too

and like vk said, a bun is good but if your hair is shorter, lots of little buns slept on holds for a few days too, i guess it's like doing rags without the rags?

post pics when you're done too!

I have always wanted to rag curl my hair because I have very curly hair, and I want bigger and looser curls. Rollers and curling irons are not working too well.

I don't get how to rag curl at all. Every site says what to do BUT I don't get how to get the rag in...like do I put the rag at the end of the hair strand, roll it up, and then tie it?

The internetz is not specific

yea...I'm actually trying this right now and it's not working for me

Do I take my hair and wrap it around the fabric. Or do I put the rag at the ends of my hair and start rolling the rag up with my hair around it?
It just keeps on falling out and looking weird....

And how do I manage to curl the ends of my hair... every tutorial online says "make sure the ends don't stick out"...but I have no idea how to do that.

our hair stylist showed me how to do it. maybe you need a sturdier rag/fabric. you know your hair best.

take a section of your hair and roll up from the bottom. over not under.
you might have to twist the section of hair first to keep it in place.
(it's probably easier to do to someone else, but i'm sure once you get it figured out it will be a breeze.)

hope that helps.

well. I got two of em in and look absolutely ridiculous. haha.

I didn't curl them up to my roots though.... because:
A) that is impossible
B) I only want the ends of my hair curled I think... I dunno.

Oh. And it's easier when you twist the strand of hair before you start rolling.

good luck

UPDATE: did my whole hair now. It looks stupid. I'm afraid it won't really look nice because I got fed up and annoyed easily so half o the time I just roller my hair really weird and tried to tie the rag as fast as possible.
ah well. we'll see.....

it didn't look too good because I took them out way too early when my hair was still wet.

It could've looked nice I think.... I'll try to do it better next time.

I have the same problem as you, I can't work curlers & the rag thing make me want to die I get so frustrated with it.

When your hair is still damp put it in a tight bun until it drys, someone said leave it over night but I wouldnt incase it got that fucked up solid look about it.
