Red hair dye: getting it to stay put

I gather, after years of experience with it, that red hair dye is notoriously bad when it comes to fading, even permanent dyes. What I'm after are tips on how I can make it stay vibrant for longer. I've been using L'oreal Feria lately. The colour stays pretty well on the top of my hair, but doesn't stay so well on the length, which I assume is due to damage.

- any specific shampoos/conditioners that seem to help?
- any methods for washing that stop the colour coming out?
- any good brands of dye that you find last longer?
- any products that keep the lengths of the hair in good condition for dyeing?

SPX hair dyes are pretty good. They are supposedly vegetable dye but i found they really stain the hair.

Also, avoid using shampoo's like pantene. Its evil!!

i've been dyeing my hair red for about 2 years and still havent found anything which keeps it staying longer .. aside from not washing hair much (but im one of those people which has to wash my hair like every day or two). And i have blondey/brown hair so the roots are really noticeable so i have to do the roots after about 4 weeks.

i use the vo5 shampoo & conditioners which i think might help. Maybe using shampoos specific for red hair might be better? I've never tried them

I use Vo5 too because mines got a red tint. I does help. Also those colour conditioners for reds, blonges, brunettes range that help your specific colour stay more vibrant.
