| | | mani/pedi does anyone else get them done?
i want to start getting them done but have never before, i normally just do my nails at home.
what is the process like? is there anything i should look out for? i've heard some beauticians cut cuticles etc which i've been told you shouldn't do? |

| | | i get a french like every month or so.
its normal. she does your cuticles, shapes your nails, paints them, puts on a few coats of cuticle/nail balm and thats it. takes about an hour. i love it.
make sure she doesnt use this kinda drill on your nails, it leaves a nasty mark [bumps] when your nails grow back. |

| | | i get mani/pedi's all the time.
and no they're not supposed to cut your cuticles as it can leave you open for infection and all that, but i absolutely love having my cuticles cut. i don't know why, it just makes me feel nice and clean and tidy. i would request it if they didn't do it.
i've also heard they shouldn't soak your hands in water before a mani, something about the oils in your fingernails expanding and then contracting which causes the paint to chip quicker...i'm not sure how true that is though.
you ask what to expect like you're going in for a surgical procedure! it's a luxury! just find a nice, clean salon, book your appointment and enjoy yourself. |

| | | Believe it or not, I've never been to a nail salon to get a professional mani or pedi, ever. I figure if I can do it myself at home, why should I pay 10 times the price to get it professionally done. |

some people can, and it looks fabulous and no one can tell the difference.
however, i am not one of those people
i get nail polish everywhere, it looks like a five year old did it. so i never even try anymore. |

| | | Bring your own tools. There's nothing worse than an infection. And you can never be too safe.

don't forget your drill.
she meant like nail files, buffers, that kind of thing. you don't want to share those with other people. |

argh i feel ill now | no, a lot of places just use the same tools. especially the asian places where they have so many customers right after another. there's no time to sterilize, and using disposables would be too costly for a lot of places that have so many customers.
a lot of the higher end salons (at least around here) keep little baggy's with your own personal tools in them. i think the first time i went i had to pay something like an extra $5 for my own, but it's worth it because then you don't have to worry about other people's germs and whatnot. |

I think long nails are tacky and gross. So it's pretty simple... I don't need to go to a professional for that.
And I also get nailpolish all over the sides of my nails when I paint them... but the excess on the sides peels off by the next day, so I don't worry about it. |

| | | My friend got ripped off getting a french manicure last week. She paid €40 for her beautician neighbour to clean, cut, shape and coat her nails, and the coating chipped the next day. According to my other friend and her mother, the job was only worth €15-€20. I've never had one myself, but personally I'd never pay for someone to do my nails. |

| | | pedis are great. but i hate having strangers touch me. it's creeepy.
my lady does it like this:
* remove polish
* foot bath thing in a jet foot bath mini tub.. whatever it's called
* scrubs feet, uses pumice stone to remove any hardspots or dead skin
* foot massage, with lotion
* cuts cuticles and then pushes them down with an orangewood stick
* cuts nails, files nails
* polish
i HATE the foot massage, it takes an extra 15 minutes, and really, i'd prefer to just GTFO 15 minutes earlier.
and mine's only 18 dollars. i've had the same french pedi for 2 weeks now and it still looks near new. |

| Really? I thought I was.
I used to get a manicure here and there, but they just got to be too much (playing guitar and drawing ruined the whole effect the day after anyway). I got tips a couple of times, but ended up regretting them. I manage so much better with short nails.
And pedicures? I can't bring myself to letting a stranger fool around with my feet, haha. I'll do my pedicure myself, thanks. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | |
