L'oreal - Tests. Drug Store cosmetics companies that don't test - Revlon/Jane & Almay

Clarins - Does not test.

Redkin - Does test.

IAMS is the worst. Most dog food companies (and cat) DO test on animals, vivisection...it's disgusting. Took me a while to find my aniamls food that wasn't tested on other animals.

It is exhausting searching for animal friendly products, it takes a while, but for me, it's well worth it. Once you know who's safe, it's easy to shop again.

Definitely order the little animal friendly product list from Peta, it really helps as a quick reference when you're out shopping.

There's also whole stores like Trader Joes, where alltheir products are animal friendly.....we'll, except for their meat.

Most mainstream companies use vivisection apparently unless they say so....
I think it depends which source you go by. I use BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection ...) (http://www.buav.org/)

And they say there are only these that don't test and/or use a fixed cut-off date (FCOD) (meanign they continue to buy in ingredients that may have been animal tested by its suppliers.
So these are ok by them:

One thing that has always bothered me about even trying to stick to animal-friendly products was the idea that the individual ingredients of a product are likely to have been tested on animals even if the final product isn't. I see a couple of people have mentioned this fixed cut-off date concept, and I saw a list someone posted up there that had some companies on it. Is there a handy list online of all the major cosmetic companies and whether they test products and/or use a cut-off date for their ingredients? I would find this incredibly helpful.

Yay for Clinique and Estee Lauder. Not so yay for L'Oreal (already knew about them) and Rimmel. I'm going to have to do some renewing of my make-up/toiletries collection - this is as good an excuse as there ever will be, haha.

God, I love The Body Shop. I'm not terribly bothered by L'Oreal's acquisition of the company, provided TBS stick to their principles. Aside from the quality of their products, I'm convinced much of their popularity also comes down to the animal-friendly aspect. What you've got to remember is that mergers and acquisitions like this really just boil down to finances, shareholders' returns, profits, etc. Maybe it's not great that TBS would associate with a company that does do testing on animals, but the association is pure business, that's the way I look at it. As long as L'Oreal aren't meddling and forcing TBS to change their practices, I don't see a problem in continuing to enjoy TBS's products as normal.

Oh and a random non-animal-testing point worth noting for the socially-conscious: If any of you are amongst those who boycott all Nestle products, let it be known that Nestle own over a quarter of the shareholding and voting rights in the L'Oreal group. Take from that what you will. It's a bit tenuous, but it might bother some people.

(edit: sorry about bumpage of an old thread, btw, saw it as a related thread)

The Buav approved companies list is a list of products that are not tested and/or apply the fixed cut off rule.

Co-Op's own brand of cat food....GOD what a lifesaver. I stopped giving my (fussy) cat Go-Cat when I found out they were owned by Nestlé down the line... and as a bonus, it's animal friendly...their shampoo's really nice, too.

For cosmetics it's great, because my favourite products are from LUSH and Urban Decay, both very animal-friendly.

On an animal-rights/vegetarian theme, did u hear about the mars bar thing btw, that they were going to re-introduce animal fats so it wouldn't be veggie anymore? there was so much pressure, they couldn't in the end.

Anyhew,
What do u guys usually stick with company wise now?
I'm pretty stuck on Nivea now and gonna have to order make-up off the net. don't think I can afford the big companies that don't test and have a fixed cut off date.
I used to use Tesco, but they don't have a fixed cut off date.

This is terrifying!! I mean, I am trying so hard to be animal cruelty concious but its getting harder.

I mean I use vaseline, nivea, herbal essences, colgate, gillette, l'oreal makeup, rimmel make up....and its all bad.

I would use more Lush and Body shop as i prefer them by miles buy its just the money. I think when my student loan comes in I may replace all my skin care and haircare products.

Tesco have started a natural range, I hope its ok as it looks really nice.

Nives is fine. I use that.
but you're right it is difficult. I had to learn not to beat myself up about it if I get something wrong, you can only research so much! Try your best that's the motto.

As I say I think Tesco doesn't use the cut off rule so some ingredients in the past might have been tested for new products...

Not sure about benefit.

Cruelty Free Shopping Guide: Non-animal testing companies and products

Good article about why Tesco is a no no:
Zoe Wood, retail correspondent
Sunday June 10, 2007
The Observer

American union officials have sounded their strongest warning yet to Tesco, stating that they will impede the retailer's West Coast debut with mass picketing if it does not talk to them.
'The market Tesco is entering is very heavily unionised,' said United Food and Commercial Workers' (UFCW) spokeswoman Jill Cashen. 'It is in its financial best interests to enter into a union relationship. We have in the past successfully mobilised our community to turn business away from companies who are not offering union representation to employees.'

Article continues

The UFCW, which has 1.3 million members in North America and 165,000 in California, argues that non-union stores pay workers lower wages and scrimp on benefits. It waged a two-year war in California against Mexican giant Grupo Gigante, which finally relented.
The threat came as Tesco's US chief executive, Tim Mason, provided details of Fresh & Easy, the chain of convenience-style stores it will launch this autumn. Tesco is investing £250m a year in the start-up it believes could eventually rival its £35bn UK operation. 'There is no point going to America to build a small business,' said Mason.

Tesco believes the 10,000 sq ft 'neighborhood markets' will help alter the American diet by offering shoppers fresher, more nutritious food on their doorstep. 'People like to shop in their neighbourhoods, if they are in touch on price and quality,' said Mason 'The food will be fresher and offer better value.' Half the retail offer will be own-brand Fresh & Easy products, which contain no trans-fats or artificial flavourings. Tesco will also put a sell-by date on fruit, which is not industry practice in America.

Fresh & Easy aims to attract a 'broad church' of shoppers from wealthy Californians to blue-collar workers. It will also cater for the American love of steak and coffee. 'Steak is an iconic product, but Americans are less fussy about wine,' said Mason. 'Coffee is more important because they drink so much of it.'

Tesco will launch Fresh & Easy simultaneously in Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego and Las Vegas, and expects to have 50 shops open by February.

The British retailer recently had a skirmish with UK super-union Unite, but in general has a constructive relationship with labour organisations here. Mason said Tesco hadn't decided on US industrial relations policy yet, but analysts expect it to follow the non-union example of competitors such as Whole Foods and Wal-Mart. Tesco has yet to embark on a recruitment drive, but is promising to pay better than Wal-Mart, which is pilloried by UFCW over pay and benefits.

Mason appeared to rule out acquisition as a way to accelerate the growth of Fresh & Easy: businesses in the US went for 'a very full price', he said.

Mason added that there were no immediate plans to open its traditional supermarkets or launch Tesco ClubCard in America, but added 'never say never'.

Stand by your cruelty-free claims, says BUAV

Leading supermarkets are threatened with being named and shamed by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) for being complicit in testing their cosmetic products on animals.

The BUAV claims consumers are being misled by leading stores which say their cosmetic products are not tested on animals. It has written to Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's warning them they risk losing tens of thousands of customers if they fail to crack down on cosmetics suppliers who test ingredients on animals.

The BUAV says animal welfare is high on consumers' list of concerns. It says that while most supermarkets say their products aren't tested on animals, the ingredients in them often are.

The BUAV has established a rigorous 'leaping bunny' kite mark that it awards to firms that ensure no animal testing occurs at any stage in the production of its cosmetics.

Earlier this month, Marks and Spencer became the first mainstream retailer to be given the BUAV kitemark. The Body Shop and the Co-op have long been committed to avoiding animal testing.

BUAV chief executive Michelle Thew said: 'I want to say to the rest of the high street: "Step up to the plate and end animal testing".'

A Sainsbury's spokesman said it was open to the BUAV's suggestions of signing up to a Humane Cosmetics Standard.

You didn't know L'Oreal tested on animals? That's why so many people were upset that Anita Roddick sold them The Body Shop.

The best way to see if your products are cruelty-free is just to check the packaging. Most of them say either "Dermatologically tested" or "Not tested on animals".
